Erik Mona (born April 1974)[1] is an American game designer who lives in Seattle, Washington.[2][3]

Career

In Mona's early gaming experience, he was a D&D and Greyhawk fan who frequented the TSR boards on AOL. He became known for an academic approach to Greyhawk, and for numerous posts from 1994-1996. He worked with others in a group known as the "Council of Greyhawk", an emsemble troupe of like-minded fans who desired to encourage other fans by writing content for the World of Greyhawk™ during the interregnum before the setting was once again published in 1998 after WotC took over the Dungeons & Dragons brand. The Council was known for publishing the first Oerth Journals.

Mona was the Editor-in-Chief of the Oerth Journal from issues 3-7 (1996-1998) and Managing Editor in issues 1 and 2 (1995).[4] In the 1990s, Mona had the opportunity to talk to designers like Robert Kuntz on the GreyTalk mailing list, where the authors shared stories of the early Greyhawk days.[5]

He co-authored the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer[6] (2000), as well as co-launched the Living Greyhawk campaign in 2001.

Mona became the head publisher of Paizo Publishing in April 2006.[7] Mona and other editors later working at Paizo Publishing were fans of Greyhawk, and thus gave some attention to the setting in Dragon and Dungeon magazines while Paizo was publishing the magazines.[5] Mona served as the editor-in-chief of Dragon beginning in 2004 and Dungeon from 2004 to 2006;[8] at the time, both magazines were published by Paizo Publishing, until the license through Wizards of the Coast expired in September 2007.[9]

He has edited, authored, and co-authored several products for the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, including Faiths and Pantheons,[10] Fiendish Codex I: Hordes of the Abyss,[11] Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk (a "solid hit")[12]), Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting, and Armies of the Abyss.[13][14][15] He's also been published by Green Ronin Publishing and The MIT Press, and has won more than a dozen major game industry awards.

He maintained a blog, the Analytical Engine, from 2005 - 2006, as well as another blog called Lemuria Press.[16] He made his last post on Lemuria Press on December 25, 2012.[17]

His work as publisher also included Planet Stories, a monthly line of science fiction and fantasy trade paperbacks. These classic novels and anthologies from authors such as Gary Gygax, Robert E. Howard, Henry Kuttner, Leigh Brackett, C. L. Moore, Michael Moorcock, and others were also published by Paizo.

Erik is an alumnus of Emerson College in Boston, MA.
