General information

Type:Human
Patron deity:Unknown
First appearance:Dungeon #77 (1999)

The Torhoon were a human race that dominated Hepmonaland some 8,000 years ago (from 591 CY), using magic and alchemy to enforce their reign. They were able to create demiplanes with their powerful spells.

Ecology

Environment

The torhoon are virtually unknown by sages and scholars in the Flanaess,[1] because their "empire was far to the south" in Hepmonaland.[1][2]

Typical physical characteristics

The torhoon were human in appearance, with some differences. They stood some seven feet tall with elongated features, especially the jaw.[3][4] Their teeth included "fanglike incisors" and hands over a foot in length.[4]

Their sorcerers wore black togas.

Society

What little is known about the torhoon includes references to advanced alchemy and magic that is lost to modern practitioners.

Religion

One of the deities the Torhoon venerated was depicted as "quite hideous, depicting a man transforming into some unidentifiable creature."[5]

Magic

The ancient magic known by the torhoon is now surrounded by mystery and sketchy details. However, at least one thing known is they could create entirely new demiplanes. Though it seems this magic was difficult to master, even by Zhawar Orlysse, a millennium-old 25th-level Suel lich.[6]

Alchemy

The Torhoon are known to have practiced advanced alchemy. They created at least two strange metals, unknown to modern scholars.

  1. "an alloy that is frictionless and impervious to acid"[7]
  2. "an unknown, silvery metal and is extremely cold"; so cold it damages bare flesh[5]

Language

The language of the Torhoon is called "ancient" and "dead".[3] Torhoon writing is described as "odd and snakelike."[8] It is decipherable only by using comphrehend languages or similar magic, or by someone with specific knowledge of ancient languages.[3]

Known vocabulary

  • "kraalpok"—victory
  • "urlaash"—madness
  • "ierak"—fly

History

Almost nothing is known of the ancient torhoon empire. Even the overwhelming majority of sages and scholars of the Flanaess know nothing of them, nor even have books to research them. That type of book is only found in the most extensive of libraries such as those owned by "powerful wzard societies or the private libraries of wizards like Tenser and Mordenkainen".[1]

Notable Torhoon NPCs

  • Kellex Zyrrinyth—an ancient torhoon sorcerer and despot[9]
