Blazebane is a castle defending the approaches to the city of Mithat in the Kingdom of Nyrond in the former Prelacy of Almor.

Description

Blazebane is a stone walled castle featuring five high towers, with a dry 25-foot deep moat which has a ring of standing stones within it radiating magic strongly.[1] The standing stones can be used to generate walls of fire against attackers.[2]

Geography

Blazebane is located near the coast of Relmor Bay, south-east of Mithat, and at the southern end of The Sword Road.

History

The goddess Daern was responsible for the construction of the castle of Blazebane while still a mortal, prior to her passing after the Battle of a Fortnight's Length in -110 CY.[3]

At the end of the Greyhawk Wars as the armies of Nyrond and the Great Kingdom fought a bloody stalemate, Blazebane was where a final stand was made to defend Mithat.[1] The Battle of Blazebane took place shortly after the Day of Dust in 584 CY. The Great Kingdom armies marched on Nyrond, taking some land until they ground to a halt at the Battle of Blazebane 3 weeks later. The invading forces suffered more than 4,000 casualties. Ahlissan army forces were mainly unscathed, but Imperial and humanoid armies suffered heavy losses including almost all senior commanders.[4]

The Royal arch-mage Ghiselinn prepared the magical defense of the castle personally. During the attack the Aerdi forces filled the moat, and siege engines bombarded the castle walls. Magical items with elemental (fire) aspects (such as wands of fire, flametongue swords, etc.) were thrown into the moat to fuel a huge wall of fire and defend the castle. Ghiselinn cast meteor swarms from the standing stones to destroy the Aerdi siege engines. The wall of fire did not damage the castle's magically protected walls, but slew over 1,500 orcs and Aerdi soldiers. The castle's defenses devastated the attacking troops, even the fiendish elements, and Blazebane held.[1]

In Spring 585 CY 1,600 troops were garrisoned in the castle, and it was a vital watching post defending the eastern border from Duke Szeffrin's forces in the former Prelacy of Almor.[1][4] Disease-ridden bodies were deliberately floated along the shore into Mithat Bay by Szeffrin's forces from Bloodcrystal in the hope of infecting Nyrond. The garrison in Blazebane protected the approaches to the Bay with wide nets to catch the briny, bloated corpses.[5]

Government

In Spring 585 CY Blazebane fell within the Almorian Borderlands of Nyrond. By 591 CY it fell within the Almorian Protectorate. In the Living Greyhawk campaign, this later became the Duchy of Almor in 592 CY.
