The Monk with No Name was an extortionist and brigand who plagued the barony of Ayelerach and elsewhere in Gary Gygax's and Robert J. Kuntz's original Greyhawk campaign.
Description
The Monk with No Name did not hesitate to burn and steal for the sake of greed, but he drew the line at murder.
History
Having growing bored with his adventurers, the Monk decided to take to the life of an extortionist, communicating to the fighter Ayelerach by means of squirrel messengers that if he did not send him 25,000 gp worth of precious gems the monk would lay waste to his fertile lands. When Ayelerach refused to accede to the monk's demands, the Monk proceded to do as he had threatened, sowing Ayelerach's fields with salt, robbing tax collectors, and committing arson. The Monk used his animal minions to spy on Ayelerach and his captains, using the information he gathered to avoid many attempts at capture.
After the increasingly frustrated Ayelerach armed his peasantry and hired many mercenaries, the Monk was finally flushed out, but he escaped by going into a catatonic state and falling into a river. Ayelerach's final plan to attack the Monk while the gems were being delivered was thwarted by the Monk's hawk.
The Monk with No Name went on to attempt the same extortion scheme on an evil high priest, but the priest's hordes of undead soon put a stop to that. A vampire was sent to hunt the Monk, ensuring the monk would not profit from his plan.
Creative origins
The Monk with No Name was played by Terry Kuntz, the third and most notorious character that he would play in the Greyhawk campaign. Terry Kuntz also played Terik.
