The Dreadwood Preserve is a province of Keoland. It consists of the majority of the Dreadwood.
History
According to legend, the the Dreadwood was first encountered by humans during the Great Migrations, when the Suloise noble family of House Malhel attempted to settle there and were never seen again.
In recent times, the kings of Keoland have avoided settling the Dreadwood, for fear of the dangerous creatures and dark secrets which are said to lurk there.
Geography
Borders
The Dreadwood Preserve consists of the majority of the Dreadwood forest. It does not include the northern reaches, which are part of the elven Barony of Grayhill. Some of the forests's edges are claimed by neighbouring settled provinces, particularly the Duchy of Gradsul.[1]
Notable locations
People
Population
The inhabitants of the region are primarily elves and other sylval creatures.
Notable individuals
Reynard Yargrove, Great Druid of the Sheldomar Valley, makes her home here.
Government
While the Dreadwood Preserve is nominally a feudal province of the Kingdom of Keoland, actual control of the area is limited. A third of the region is ruled by elves and other sylvan creatures who are nominally subjects of the Keoish crown, but in practice they are largely independent.
Fully half of the area of the Dreadwood Preserve is off-limits to Keoish forces, and only the exceptionally foolish or brave try their chances there.[1]
Economy
Resources
Logging is forbidden within the preserve. Most of the forest is too dangerous to exploit for resources.
Currency
The Dreadwood Preserve uses the standard currency of Keoland: the platinum griffon (pp), gold lion (gp), electrum eagle (ep), silver hawk (sp), and copper sparrow (cp).
