The Archbarony of Ratik is an independent feudal monarchy in the northeastern Flanaess. Small but prosperous, it is known for its snowy climate.

History

Founding

Ratik was originally founded as the Great Kingdom of Aerdy as a buffer territory to protect its northern reaches from the Suel barbarians.

In 109 CY, the Great Kingdom successfully defended its northernmost reaches from invasion by the Fruztii barbarians. Overking Manshen established the Bone March, which he gave as a fiefdom to the victorious Aerdi generals. The generals soon saw the need to protect their holdings by establishing an additional buffer zone to the north, and in 122 CY appointed veteran General Sir Pelgrave Ratik of Winetha to oversee the expansion of the Great Kingdom's borders as far north as the Griff Mountains.[1]

That winter, General Ratik pushed crossed Kalmar Pass and captured the town of Bresht (now Ratikhill) from the Fruztii, then struck an alliance with the dwarves of the eastern Rakers which forced the Fruztii to retreat to the defensible Timberway Forest. Ratik wisely avoided following the Fruztii into an obvious ambush, but instead halted and established a fort overlooking Grendep Bay at Onsager Point, which he called Marner.[1]

Over the following years, Marner grew from a military outpost into a small port city, establishing trade with the dwarves, including in gems and furs. The fort's location allowed him to secure the surrounding area, and its proximity to the Timberway allowed Ratik to establish as a center of shipbuilding.[1]

In spring of 128 CY, the Fruztii and Schnai allied to attack Marner in a surprise attack by sea. In a genius move, General Ratik set the port entrances ablaze, forcing the barbarian armada to approach by a narrow path where it was destroyed by the port's siege engines and navy. The Overking was sufficiently impressed with General Ratik that he granted him the title of Baron over the lands he had captured, with the town of Bresht renamed to Ratikhill in his honor.[1]

Development

Trade with Spinecastle led to an alliance between Ratik and the Bone March, and the two nations saw two centuries of peace and prosperity.[1]

In 356 CY, during the Great Kingdom's secession crisis with Nyrond, a unified force of the Fruztii and Schnai barbarians attacked the Great Kingdom. Overking Portillan was forced to abandon the defense of Nyrond to divert his troops to protect the northern border. The defense raised by the humans and dwarves of Ratik was legendary, and earned them the respect of the Frutzii.[1]

Growing independence

During the Turmoil Between Crowns (437-446 CY), Ratik gained semi-palatinate status as the Great Kingdom's authority over its furthest reaches waned. Baron Alain II of Ratik declared himself the title of Archbaron. Ratik allied with the Bone March against both the northern barbarians and the North Province of the Great Kingdom.[1]

In 560 CY, nonhuman tribes from the Rakers and Blemu Hills invaded the Bone March, killing its leaders and subjugating its populace in 563 CY. Ratik had time to prepare a defense, but received no support from Overking Ivid V and was not strong enough to defeat the invaders alone. Archbaron Lexnol III of Ratik forged an alliance with the Frost Barbarians known as the Northern Alliance.[1]

Ratik subsequently declared complete independence from Great Kingdom.[1]

Recent history

In 579 CY, Lexnol III's only son Alain IV married Lady Evaleigh, daughter of the count of Knurl, the only surviving province of the Bone March. In 580 CY, agents of the Bone March stole the Seal of Marner in a plot to damage the alliance between Ratik and the Frost Barbarians, but it was later recovered.[1]

In 586 CY, Alain IV led an army into the Bone March to retake Spinecastle, with the ultimate goal of unifying the Bone March and Ratik. The attack was a failure, and Alain was pulled from his horse by gnolls and slain. Baron Lexnol collapsed upon hearing the news, and was bedridden ever since. Lady Evaleigh assumed the throne in his stead.[1]

As of 591 CY, Ratik and Knurl now suffer progressively stronger attacks by the demuhumans of the Bone March, and have discovered spies and agents from numerous realms. Ratik seeks an alliance with the Snow Barbarians, but the Schnai do not respect Evaleigh as leader.[1]

Ruler

Ratik has been ruled since 586 CY by Lady Evaleigh, daughter of Count Dunstan of Knurl and widow of Prince Alain IV, son of Archbaron Lexnol III. Evaleigh assumed the throne after Lexnol was stricken by palsy upon news of his son's death in the Bone March. She is a human rogue with some skill with arcane magic, and is chaotic good in alignment.[1]
