Jolene, Lady Jolene of Veluna or Jolene of Samprastadar, was a powerful noble landowner and priestess of Veluna that was betrothed to Prince Thrommel IV of Furyondy.

She was a landowning priestess[1], presumably of Rao (the main religion of Veluna[2]), although it is not clear if this meant she was a cleric.

Relationships

Jolene was the daughter of Plar Eldried Sarneth of Grayington.[3]

Jolene was betrothed to Prince Thrommel IV in about 569 CY, but he disappeared in 573 CY.[4]

History

Jolene became Supreme Mistress of the Celestial Order of the Moons (the congress of representatives from seven secular noble houses and Verbobonc[5]) young, and as of about 569 CY.[6] She still held the office of Supreme Mistress in 591 CY.[7][8]

In 591 CY the "reclusive" Jolene was leading efforts by the secular nobility to exploit Canon Hazen's increasing inattentiveness by increasing the power of the Celestial Order and weakening the influence of the Church of Rao.[9]

She was still searching for Thrommel and offering a reward in 591 CY.[10][11]

Jolene in the Living Greyhawk Campaign

Jolene featured in the Living Greyhawk campaign in the Veluna (VEL) region. However, she played a small role which seemed to conflict at least in part with the canon history as set out above.

Following Thrommel’s disappearance in 573 CY Jolene “disappeared from the public eye”.[12] However, she clearly continued until 591 CY as Supreme Mistress, presumably with unavoidable public duties. She was traveling in Spring 591 CY looking for Thrommel, having done so before.

Jolene was at the Battle of Valkurl.[13].

In 592 CY she attended celebrations for the construction of Castle Sepher, surrounded by Furyondy nobles vying for her attention. She was described as a noble ranger, beautiful but muscular, bored with the nobles, and a member of the Defenders of Veluna. She was noted to be wed to Thrommel who disappeared while leading a crusade against the Temple of Elemental Evil (incorrect and presumably a reference to the events of 569 CY, unless the “crusade” was secret and in 573 CY), and had been officially buried in Furyondy several months prior.[14]

In 594 CY[15] she was a “young woman”, skilled ranger, noblewoman of Veluna with the ear of many important people in Veluna, a member of the “fabled” Defenders of Veluna, and able to operate as a captain of the Mitrik Temple Guard and professor of the College of the Divine in Mitrik. She was noted as once betrothed to Thrommel “prior to his disappearance at the Battle of Emridy Meadows” (incorrect again).[16] She introduced herself as an official of the Church of Rao assigned to special missions (an organization she was trying to counter the power of for the nobles in 591 CY). Jolene was “young” in 569 CY. She cannot have still been young in 594 CY some 25 years later.

In Brewfest 596 CY she was at the proposed wedding of her cousin Lady Rachael Landis of Whitehale (niece and heir to Duke Clariece Landis of Whitehale) to Baron Stephon Nitol of Valkurl at Castle Sepher[17], described as Jolene of Samprastadar, a Defender of Veluna and former Supreme Mistress. She did not use her titles, had renounced her birthrights and left politics years ago after the tragic loss of her fiancée, Thrommel[18] - directly contrary to canon, that she was Supreme Mistress in 591 CY.

Joshua Borrington suggested Jolene was the “belle of the ball” in her day like Rachael, but doubted Jolene had Rachael’s instincts for politics.[19] However, Jolene actually (in canon) held her position at the top of the political hierarchy for over 20 years and was thus clearly a canny politician, while Rachael was heir to a house (Landis) that had been as in serious financial and political problems (per that adventure).

By 596 CY Thrommel had reappeared in Furyondy. However, Jolene was not apparently looking for him. She was attending the weddings of cousins and running special missions for the Church.

Lady Jolene “Landis” (Duchess Clariece Landis had been the noble ruler of Whitehale diocese, but was supplanted by Lord Marcus Randis via political machinations in 597 CY) in 598 CY was the leader with at least three other Defenders of Veluna of a number of powerful individuals – Knights of Salvation and Veluna; priests and arcanists from the Great College; woodsmen and druids from the mountains and the forests – making up a powerful group sent into the mountains of northwest Veluna, to deal with a magical threat to Veluna. The group succeeded but many did not return, including Lady Jolene.[20]
