Callistor is a town in western Nyrond on the Duntide River.
Geography
Callistor is located on the Duntide River, below Arnford, on the western side. Like Arnford, Callistor is a ferry town that acts as a gateway to the towns of the south coast of Nyrond and a market for produce brought from the Gnatmarsh to the south west.[1]
History
Callistor was founded as a ferry town across the Duntide River.[1]
Following the Greyhawk Wars, like the rest of Nyrond, inhabitants were desperate because of the war and economic conditions including heavy taxes. Locals tried to make a living by bringing produce from the nearby Gnatmarsh. Sales of produce would often take place by night outside of town, in secluded barns and farms, to avoid taxes and confiscation by the local militia. The swamp dwellers dealt only on a strict barter basis. The local soldiers in that period failed to patrol the northern margins of the Gnatmarsh, allowing monsters to emerge and attacks the locals.[1]
People
Population
In 585 CY the population was approximately 4,000[2]. By 591 CY it had grown to 4,300.[3]
The races of Nyrond can all be expected to be found here, being humans (with an Oeridian dominance, and Suel present, as ethnic background), Olve (mainly sylvan with a small high elf presence), Halfling (stout), Dwarf, Gnome, half-elf and half-orc.[3]
Nyrond generally is lawful neutral in alignment, with lawful good, neutral good, chaotic good, and neutral also prevalent.[3]
Notable Persons
King Lynwerd's cousin, Lady Astra Callistor, vanished without a trace in late 590 CY leading an expedition into the Abbor-Alz after entering a valley dominated by ancient, abandoned towers.[4]
Religion
The common religions of Nyrond can be expected to be followed here, being Heironeous (the official state religion), Beory, Rao, Pelor, Zilchus, Norebo, Pholtus, Ralishaz, Boccob, Delleb, Celestian.[3]
Following the Greyhawk Wars superstitions and the worship of evil gods (including Hextor and Incabulos) began to grow as a sign of the despair of the common folk.[5]
Languages
The common languages of Nyrond can be expected to be spoken here, being Common, Nyrondese, Old Oeridian, Elven, and Halfling.[3]
Government
Callistor is located within the Kingdom of Nyrond.
Following the reorganization of provincial administration under King Lynwerd I that commenced Needfest 1, 591 CY Callistor was placed under the control of the County of Brackenmoor, with the provincial capital at Beetu.[3]
Economy
Callistor sits on the Duntide River which is a major trade artery through Nyrond, running from the Flinty Hills, through Womtham, the capital Rel Mord, Swan Bore, Arnford, Callistor itself, then past the Gnatmarsh (to the west) and onto Nessermouth on Relmor Bay.
The town also sits on a major north-south road running from Beetu near the Celadon Forest]] to the south coast on Relmor Bay, including Shantadern, Nessermouth and The Small Ports. As such, Callistor acts as a ferry town over the Duntide, and gateway to the towns of the south coast.[1]
Locals harvest swamp hay, trapped animals and birds, and great eels from the nearby Gnatmarsh, and the town acts as a market for such produce.[1]
Military
In 585 CY some 200 militia were stationed in Callistor, and responsible for patrolling the northern margins of the Gnatmarsh. At that time, they hardly ventured there, and were mainly concerned with enforcing taxes and confiscations, which resulted in monsters emerging from the marsh and attacking locals without warning or protection.[1]
