Crystalmists are swarms of living crystals which inhabit high mountains, especially the Crystalmists.
Ecology
During the day, crystalmists are inert, with less self-awareness than insects. They lie prone on the ground, not glowing or moving. During this time, they absorb gases and minerals from the air and rocks and store sunlight. At night, they float aimlessly in the air like large, glowing snowflakes, unless threatened, at which point they swarm. If a creature passes through one of the drifting clouds of crystalmists, they interpret this as a threat and form hive entities made up of 50 individual crystalmists. Their collective intelligence increases to animal level and they are able to project beams of white light capable of igniting flammable objects.
Crystalmists reproduce by binary fission.
Environment
Crystalmists dwell in tall mountains, particularly the Crystalmist Mountains. Sages disagree over whether the creatures are named for the range or the range for the creatures.
They can be found in any temperate or subtropical mountains, however.
Typical physical characteristics
Crystalmists are drifting crystals that resemble glowing snowflakes a half inch in diameter. Their swarms are about twelve inches in diameter. They are inert and lightless during the day, but glow in the dark.
Alignment
Crystalmists are neutral in alignment, caring nothing for good or evil.
Society
Crystalmists only interact with others of their kind when they perceive a threat. Apart from that, they have no society worth mentioning.

The crystalmist was first introduced in Greyhawk Adventures, and reprinted with less detail in the Monstrous Compendium Greyhawk Adventures Appendix.
