This article is about the sourcebook. For the overking of the same name, see Ivid V.

Ivid the Undying is an official sourcebook published online by Wizards of the Coast. Written by Carl Sargent, Ivid the Undying covers the post-Greyhawk Wars Great Kingdom, and is named for Ivid V, last Overking of that realm.

Publishing history

Ivid the Undying was written circa 1993 by Carl Sargent for TSR. Although the manuscript was largely completed, the book never saw print, for unknown reasons. It is speculated that TSR simply intended to discontinue the World of Greyhawk™ product line in 1993. No new World of Greyhawk products would be released until 1998, following TSR's acquisition by Wizards of the Coast.

Production on Ivid the Undying went as far as the commission of cover artwork by Jeff Easley. When the book was cancelled, the art was instead adapted for use as the cover art of Birthright accessory Blood Enemies: Abominations of Cerilia (1995).[1] The original art appeared in the Jeff Easley 1995 Trading Card set as #32, where it is named "Ivid, the Undying".[2]

According to The Acaeum, the stock number initially assigned to Ivid the Undying (#9399) was instead reassigned to WGR5 Iuz the Evil (1993).[1]

The series code WGR7 has been used in the community at least as early as 2001,[3] placing it as the last in the WGR series which ran from WGR1 Greyhawk Ruins in 1990 to Carl Sargent's WGR6 The City of Skulls in 1993. However, the code WGR7 is not official, and the community also uses the code "WGRx".

Excerpts in Dragon magazine

In a response to a reader letter in Dragon #203 (Mar 1994), the magazine announced that they had acquired a copy of the unpublished Ivid the Undying manuscript and intended to publish excerpts, compiled by Wolfgang Baur. Three such articles were published: Dragon #204 (Apr 1994), A Strange Alliance; Dragon #206 (Jun 1994), The Sea Barons; and Dragon #208 (Aug 1994), The Adri Forest.

Published online

TSR released the manuscript online, circa April 1995 on the America Online internet service,[4] calling it TSR's "first fully electronic game release".[5] The file was released as a plain text document named ivid.txt,[6] and appeared at the AOL Keyword "TSR" on "Download of the Month" library, released in both DOS and Mac plain text formats, as well as including three maps in GIF format.[7] The same ivid.txt was released on TSRinc.com in 1997.[8]

Allman RTF

On October 28, 1997, William Allman completed a conversion of the document from plain text (TXT) into RTF format.[6] In 1998, Allman's RTF version was used for download on TSRinc.com's "Greyhawk Goodies" section alongside separate, individual downloads of the map images from the Dragon articles.[9]

Allman's RTF version was available later on the Wizards of the Coast "Previous Edition Downloads" page, likely at the page's creation circa June 3, 2003, included in the ividform.zip file. It was offered again alongside map GIFs as separate downloads.[10]

An unofficial PDF based on Allman's previous work was created on Mar 2, 2002, hosted at The Acaeum. Subsequent small updates were made to this file between 2003 and 2013, including the addition of a title image and sidebar graphics similar to those appearing in Iuz the Old.
