Thessalar is Oerth's most infamous transmuter, a Lich who specializes in creating new monsters. He takes credit for the chuul, grick, mimic, rust monster, owlbear and several other monstrosities—though some of these claims are dubious at best.[1] Thessalar claims to be the wizard behind most of the monsters created via arcane experimentation. He's known for creating the thessalhydra and related creatures, which have multiple hydra-like heads surrounding a central maw.

Description

Thessalar was a master alchemist and creator of monsters, whose own blood was said to possess dire magical properties. Over time, he had subjected himself to so many of his own experiments that his blood had taken on alchemical and magical properties. He regularly used it as the basis for many of the reagents used throughout his labs. He was vainglorious, egotistical, and utterly ruthless in furthering his research.[2]

Relationships

Thessalar wass accompanied by his homunculus. Resembling an impish version of Moloch (complete with small ruby eyes worth 100 gp each), Thessalar's homunculus assisted with the artificer’s experiments, and acted as a conduit for the complicated weave of magic in the Temple of Moloch.[3]

History

His career began as a priest in the service of Moloch, where he rose through the ranks before eventually taking over the temple as a working laboratory. Most of his experiments involved the pursuit of new forms of life, resulting in such creatures as the thessalhydra and the owlbear.[2]

Since 576 CY,[1] Thessalar has dwelled in the Wormcrawl Fissure, near Rift Canyon, where he continues his disturbing experiments in the creation of new life.
