Cordrend is a walled town on the eastern border of the Kingdom of Nyrond.
Geography
Cordrend is a walled town to the west of the boundary between Nyrond and the North Kingdom.[1]
History
Under the Pact of Greyhawk the border between Nyrond and the North Province of the Great Kingdom was agreed to be a mile to the east, making it a key strategic location. A fortified military base was established there, and in 585 CY a double stone wall built placing strain on the limited finances of Nyrond. In 585 CY the lands to the east were in anarchy, with no ruler in Innspa and rumors of factions struggling for power there. Bone March humanoids and Aerdi soldiers (some orcish) roamed the hills there, fighting each other and raiding into eastern Nyrond. Troops patrolling from Cordrend and watch-posts to the west and north of the town were involved in daily battles. The troops in Cordrend were well equipped and organized, but due to being outnumbered were being worn down by attrition. Early Spring 585 CY saw the first attack of fiends, with three vrock surprised a watch-post to the north, and killing 30 before they were destroyed.[1]
People
Population
Prior to the Greyhawk Wars the town was home to 1,800 people, but by 585 CY the town was also a base for that number of soldiers.[1]
By 591 CY the population was 5,000.[2]
Notable individuals
In 585 CY Captain-General Osmeran was the garrison commander in Cordrend.[1]
Government
The town falls within the province of the Royal Duchy of Womtham.
Living Greyhawk campaign
In the Living Greyhawk campaign, Cordrend was detailed in the "Nyrond Gazetteer" fan-created source-book. It was indicated as remaining a military town with soldiers outnumbering civilians. The garrison remained the main basis of the economy, although it has some some other minor trade such as metals from the Flinty Hills. The town remained busy day or night with various businesses frequented by off duty soldiers.
