Publication history
WGA2 Falconmaster was written by Richard W. and Anne Brown, with a cover by Ken Frank, and was published by TSR in 1990 as a 64-page booklet with cardstock sheets and an outer folder.[1]
This adventure is part of a series of three scenarios that starts with WGA1 Falcon's Revenge, continues with WGA2 Falconmaster, and concludes with WGA3 Flames of the Falcon.
"Origins: Continuing the Trilogy. WGA2: "Falconmaster" (1990) is the second adventure in the Falcon trilogy, after WGA1: "Falcon's Revenge" (1990). That places it in the strong final year of the second wave of Greyhawk production.
Adventure Tropes. This adventure continues to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor, bringing encounter-based episodic play to Greyhwk. However, there's bit of variety: some of the encounters are laid into a wilderness framework. There's also bit of investigation, a manor crawl, and a temple defense — so consider it an encounter-based adventure with some agency along the way.
Accessories of Note. This adventure contains more fold-up cardstock buildings for use with FR8: Cities of Mystery and WGA1: "Falcon's Revenge" (1990). They represent the Temple of St. Cuthbert and its grounds.
Exploring Greyhawk. "Falconmaster" is set in and around the City of Greyhawk, with a journey north into the Cairn Hills to visit the Falcon's homebase.
NPCs of Note. The big NPC of this adventure is the Falcon, a spirit naga and leader of the Cult of Iuz. She of course must escape to ensure that the trilogy continues.
Also of note is Mizaab Zalen, one of the unique Greyhawk dragons. They were introduced in Greyhawk Adventures (1988), which said that there are "no fewer than five Greyhawk dragons in the city whose name they bear!" This is one; a second would be introduced in WGA3: "Flames of the Falcon" (1990) [—Aestrella Shanfarel.]
Organizations of Note. This adventure continues to be about the conflict between the Cult of Iuz and the Church of St. Cuthbert.
About the Creators. Anne Brown began working at TSR as an editor in 1989, first on their magazines, then as part of their Game Division. She also authored a handful of books for TSR, of which the Falcon Trilogy was the first. Richard Brown, her husband, authored just these three books for TSR (though he's more recently written Living Greyhawk adventures for Wizards).
