Heraan is one of the ancient Isles of Woe. It is referred to as both a city and an island, and was thought to have been destroyed along with the rest of the islands. The city is also "where the Codex of the Infinite Planes was supposedly first inscribed."[1]
Because the Isles were ethereal, the only way to reach the "ruined ancient city of Heraan"[1] was via the "Heraan boathouse", whose entrance was found in a "cave next to the old Flan standing stones."[1] which were "about a week beyond lonely Stankasfer."[1]
At the bottome of "that cave—more like a pit with its steep limestone sides descending down to the shadow-shrouded floor some hundred feet below"[2], and beyond "half a mile of twisted caverns",[2] deep within limestone caves, is an underground cove. The entrance to the cove is "obscured by seaweed, and only a little light trickles through the vegetation."[3] Inside, "the walls are decorated with strange symbols and artwork in a style unlike anything [..] ever seen."[3]
This cove holds an "arcane boathouse" with "ancient spell-constructed boats"[1]—three sail-less, corroded copper longships which take PCs to Heraan. "This is the Heraan Boathouse—the once-lost passage to the strange, obscured city that dominates the Isles of Woe. Once aboard the strange arcane boats, the characters can cross over to the magical isles."[3]
Publication history
A "dungeon delve event" set in 592 CY (2002) called The Isles of Woe for the Living Greyhawk campaign, debuted at Origins Game Fair 2002. In the lead-up (April/May 2002) to the Isles of Woe event (July 2002), two prequel "introductory encounters" tied to it appeared in the Living Greyhawk Journal #10 and #11, as part of Dragon magazine issues #294 and #295.[3][4]
During the course of this event, the Isles of Woe resurfaced, emerging not from the depths of the Nyr Dyv, but from the Ethereal Plane where Yagrax's curse had banished them a millennium ago. The Isles' connection to the Material Plane was tenuous, however, leaving them sliding back and forth to the Ethereal Plane periodically.
In one adventure, low-level player characters explored a Temple of Olhydra.[citation needed] Mid-level characters explored the ruins of a town known as the Village of the Ancients.[5] Mid- and high-level characters explored a structure in a cliff face in the center of the main island known as the Green Devil's Tower. It was the stronghold of a powerful mage or a school of magic.
