The Lendore Isles, also known as the Spindrift Isles, are a collection of five large islands in the Solnor Ocean, just off the eastern coast of the former Great Kingdom.

History

The Isles were originally divided into two provinces—the main isle (Lendore Isle), and the remainder of the isles north of it. The other islands were primarily populated by olve, and Lendore Isle was a primarly human realm. Very little was known at the time about the elven lands, and the elves who lived there were mostly reclusive and there was no trade there. Any settlements were even entirely unknown.[1]

In the 570s CY, warnings had been heard about calamity coming to the Spindrift Isles.[2]

At the advent of the Greyhawk Wars, in 583 CY, the southern Lendore Isle was suddenly occupied by the elves, taking over the island, ejecting nearly all non-elves who lived there. The residents of the island were given "safe passage to the Sea Barons, the Lordship of the Isles, Medegia, or elsewhere along the east coast of Aerdy.[3] Those being exiled were only permitted three days to prepare, and many of them escaped through the Gate of Glass to the City of Glass which floats above the island.[2][4]

Creative origins

The Spendrift Isles were originally created for the World of Greyhawk by Len Lakofka, and included by Gary Gyax in the setting.

In 1980, Lakofka submitted three modules to TSR, taken from adventures he had originally created for his home campaign of Lendore Isle: The Secret of Bone Hill, The Assassin's Knot and Deep Dwarven Delve. Gary Gygax was simultaneously creating his World of Greyhawk Fantasy Game Setting, and Lakofka asked if "Lendore Isle" could be incorporated into Gygax's new world. Gygax agreed, and Lakofka chose the largest island in the Spindrift Isles archipelago as the location of his Lendore Isles adventures. This was the first material from an author other than Gygax or Rob Kuntz to be incorporated into the Greyhawk setting.[5]

In 1981, Lakofka's first adventure, L1 The Secret of Bone Hill, was published. Reviews were mixed. In Different Worlds, Anders Swenson complained about the randomness of encounters, and that the monsters and townspeople were unrealistically compressed into too small a geographical area.[6] However, White Dwarf's Jim Bambra gave it an 8 out 10, and liked the roleplaying situations the module afforded.[7] James Maliszewski claimed the module was one of his favorites because it created "a very flexible 'sandbox' framework for a low-level campaign".[8]

In 1983, TSR published Lakofka's second adventure, L2 The Assassin's Knot. Reviews were again mixed. Rick Swan, in The Space Gamer, thought the murder mystery of the plot was "a very pedestrian affair", and the adventure was "just plain dull".[9] Dave Morris in White Dwarf disagreed, calling it "an entertaining murder mystery for AD&D characters" and scoring it 7 out of 10.[10] In 2004, Erik Mona and James Jacobs ranked The Assassin's Knot as the 29th greatest AD&D adventure ever written.[11]

Lakofka also continued to write more articles in Dragon in addition to his monthly column. When Gygax was creating the World of Greyhawk, Lakofka suggested that based on the migration patterns of various Greyhawk races as outlined in the campaign setting, that "his" Lendore Isles would have been mainly settled by Suel.[12]

Lakofka's third Lendore Isles adventure, L3 Deep Dwarven Delve, was scheduled to be released in 1986, and Lakofka planned to write two more "L" series adventures. However, at the end of 1985, Lakofka's long-time friend Gary Gygax left the company. Plans to publish Lakofka's third adventure were shelved.[13] Lakofka also stopped writing his Leomund's Tiny Hut column for Dragon; his final column was published in April 1986 (Issue #108).

Lakofka continued to work on further adventures in the "L" series, and in 2009, the fourth installment, L4 Devilspawn, was released by Dragonsfoot.org as a free download.[14] Lakofka also created a fifth module, L5 The Kroten Campaign, which was released in 3 parts by Dragonsfoot.org as a free download.[15] Lakofka mused about writing up to four more "L" adventures, but ultimately these were never created.[16]

Publication history

This portion of the World of Greyhawk served as the base of Len Lakofka's campaign, and is the setting of the L series of modules authored by Lakofka: L1 The Secret of Bone Hill, L2 The Assassin's Knot, and L3 Deep Dwarven Delve. Previously unpublished materials from Lakofka's gaming sessions in the late 1970s and early 1980s were released in an article in issue 5 (August 2005) of the Footprints e-zine. Additional material, originally intended for release in L3 Deep Dwarven Delve was released by Lakofka in an article in issue 9 (December 2006) of Footprints. In 2006, Lakofka announced on the Pen & Paper website that he will be releasing L4 and L5 through the Dragonsfoot website, introducing additional material and adventures set in the Lendore Isles.[citation needed]

In their earliest published form the Lendore Isles are named the Spindrift Isles. The southernmost island was named Lendore Isle after the Suloise archmage who led the human settlement of it. The northern islands are described as being inhabited by elves who hold an isolationist foreign policy. It is notable that the northern islands are described in this source and the one following as being three in number though the map included in the sources show four northern islands. This earliest form is the setting for the L series, which takes place on Lendore Isle. The town of Restenford is detailed in L1 and the town of Garroten (Lake Farmin) in L2. L3 is set in the Restonford/Lake Farmin area but no details are given other than of the dungeon in which the adventure takes place.

The setting changed dramatically in 1992 with the publication of From the Ashes, which advanced the World of Greyhawk's timeline to the year 585 CY and details the aftermath of the Greyhawk Wars. In this iteration the name of the isles are changed from the Spindrift Isles to the Lendore Isles, though the former is still used as a common name. In this description, the elves of the northern isles have taken over the southern isle of Lendore, expelling the majority of the human population in 583 CY, so that the elves might form a theocratic society. The elves protect the islands with magical fogs and illusions to prevent any contact with outsiders. Lendorian Elvish, a language unique among the other languages in the World of Greyhawk, is also introduced.

The Adventure Begins, published in 1998, which advances the timeline further, gives few details about the islands themselves due to the isolationist policies of the inhabitants but makes note of increased activity by elven mariners from the Spindrifts.

In the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer the realm is described as the Lendore Isles, with more details given of the islands including that they make up a nation officially known as the Radiant and Transformed Domain of Sehanine of the Lendore Isles. The focus of the theocracy is revealed to be the cult of the elven goddess Sehanine Moonbow, which is tied to the increasingly widespread elven mystery cult known as the People of the Testing. The issue of the total number of islands is addressed by the authors in-universe by explaining that some older charts in the World of Greyhawk only showed four islands.
