The High Tower Inn is a tavern and hostelry found in the Garden Quarter of the Free City of Greyhawk. On maps with a key or legend, the inn is designated "G5".

Description

The High Tower Tavern is in the southeastern corner of the Garden Quarter, on Garden Road, just a block or so from St. Cuthbert's Gate.[1][2][3][4]

The most distinguishing detail of this inn is its namesake tower. It is tall and "pointed at the top like the hat of an old and eccentric wizard"[5]

While the private meeting rooms are highly sought after,[5] and "the clientele is notably wealthy,[6] the tavern isn't as well-heeled as the Patrician's Club or other similar, notoriously fancy establishments in the Garden Quarter.[5] It is "comfortable but unpretentious,"[7][8] "not at all ostentatious", and it "would be hard to find customers who are having a better time."[5]

Regulars

The inn in known for having "numerous loyal customers, including many wizards from the Guild of Wizardry."[8]

The High Tower is a "traditional meeting place for the Circle of Eight,"[5][7] although, "on most occasions, these wizards disguise themselves before venturing out in public. Otto, Tenser, and Nystul are the three wizards most commonly encountered here."[5] Jallarzi Sallavarian also frequents the High Tower.[6]

"Six excellent rooms (for private games or for overnight guests) are available for rent, but only to friends of [the proprietor]." They are "plush, reasonably-priced sleeping chambers, each with maid service and private washing facilities."[5]

There are another three rooms reserved for regular customers "in the inn’s peak-roofed tower.".[7][5] Each room is a small floor of the hostelry.[5][8] However, these are meeting or dining rooms, and do not have sleeping accommodations.[8]

The inn itself does not sponsor or host gambling, but amongst themselves regular patrons often play quiet "games of chance, particularly cards and similar games involving great concentration"[8]. Poker is notably played.[8] These are typically for regular customers who know each other at least passingly, because letters of debt are sometimes used as markers in games. A new visitor would have to be vouched for by a regular in order to be welcomed to a game.[5]
