Cauldron of Night is a powerful magical site located under Tar Hill on Asperd Island in the Sea Barons that radiates evil energies. The mineshafts leading to the entrance are guarded by a hundred-strong mercenary outfit, as well as being protected by various warding gylphs.
Description
The cauldron is a vast depression, surrounded by a columns of ebony stone, deep underground. It is 50ft across, and the depths are obscured by magical darkness that no scrying spell can penetrate.
History
Items made in the Cauldron of Night
- Malachite Throne
- Astrosus—crafted by Lord Maeril the death knight, with priests of Hestor. An evil intelligent blade with the memories of Farian of Lirtham. Lost in 392 CY.[1]
- Spear of Sorrow—"seven-foot-long barbed spear shaped from the black stone of the Cauldron by Karoolk, last Court Archmage of Ivid V."[2]
Resources
The main thing of value from the cauldron, and the reason so many seek it, is the ebony stone that surrounds the central depression. The stone can be used to craft very powerful but inevitably cursed magical artifacts.
Rumors & legends
It is said that the cauldron is near sentient, and chooses who is able to take stone from the spine like stalactites to use in the making of magical artifacts. Those who the Cauldron rejects, who are often powerful and accomplished mages, are reported to freeze down to their very marrow and shatter into dust. Anyone who does succeed in getting a piece for their creation inevitably face a high cost, driven mad by their own creations or dragged off into the Abyss.
