The River of Angry Souls is a subterranean waterway in the underoerth.
Description
The River of Angry Souls once defined one of the boundaries of the ancient subterranean empire of Zarum in Western Oerik. Members of the race of progenitors of the githzerai and githyanki (who may have been human at the time, according to most sources), fleeing the illithid conquest of their empire, were trapped between the advancing mind flayers and the raging river. Rather than being enslaved, tortured, and devoured by the illithids, the refugees flung themselves into the torrent. The number of corpses was so great that the mighty stream turned into a slow-moving channel of sludge, given a "strange sentience" from the thousands of tortured souls eternally trapped within.[1]
Clerics of Nerull have a "sick fascination with [the river]", throwing victims in to see if they are subsumed into the agonized collective in the same way as the ancient gith. Living creatures who enter the water are tormented by the cacophony of thousands of souls roaring into their unprotected minds (damaging their Wisdom ability score) and die—immobilized, helpless, and unconscious—suffering nightmare horrors, in the river.[1]
