The bonesnapper is a five-foot-tall reptile descended from carnivorous dinosaurs.[1][2][3]

Ecology

Bonesnappers are a branch of retiles descended from dinosaurs "that roamed the world many thousands of years ago".[1] Although, dinosaurs are not gone—they're rare and only found in some isolated places, and some are even hunted,[1] Dinosaurs are progenitors of bonesanappers much in the same way wolves are antecedants of dogs, but both are contemporary animals.

Environment

The tropical or sub-tropical forests and swamps found in the Amedio Jungle and Hepmonaland commonly have bonesnappers.[1][4]

When they are young, bonesnappers are solitary creatures, not having a lair until it finds a mate and raises young.[1]

Typical physical characteristics

The bonesnapper is dark green,[1] olive[1], or grey-green colour mottled with dark grey spots and patches.[2] It has tiny scarlet eyes and yellow-white teeth.[2]

A young bonesnapper is physically mature by three years old and is fully grown.[1]

Alignment

As most animals are, a bonesnapper is neutral.[1][2]

The very first appearance of the bonesnapper in White Dwarf magazine listed them as lawful evil, but that was the only instance of it and that was not published in D&D or TSR source.

Creative origins

The Bonesnapper was created by Ian Liovingstone for "The Fiend Factory" in White Dwarf magazine in 1978. The editor of that article, Don Turnbull (Managing Director at TSR) was also the editor for the Fiend Folio (1e) which included the bonesnapper.[5]
