The Singing Stones of Vesve are a mysterious stone circle found in the Vesve Forest.
Description
The Singing Stones of Vesve lie just west of the Sepia Uplands, in the wooded hills of the Vesve, just southwest of the headwaters of the Deepstil River(U4-72).[1][2]
They are arranged in a 40-foot diameter circle atop a grassy knoll, which is surrounded by trees. Each stone ranges from three to twelve feet tall. There are 42 stones altogether.
When a breeze from the west blows, gentle music emanates from them, turning rapidly to discord when travelers venture near, then going silent for three to five years. Divinations indicate that the stones await some reply, or need to be "tuned" in some mystical rite.[1]
Powers
The method of activating the stones is exceedingly complicated. It must be performed during one of the rare active periods of the stones while they are singing, in addition to requiring use of two specific magic items and specific spellcasting. A particular harp of charming owned by evil fey is necessary, though it must be played by someone with bardic magic. Additionally, use of a staf of thunder and lightning which must be wielded by a cleric of Obad-hai is required.
It is unknown precisely what the stones will do once properly triggered or keyed, but it is believed they may have powers related to elemental magics such as empowering summons "with call woodland beings and similar spells; granting the ability to call lightning; granting the effects of barkskin or stoneskin by touching one of the stones; enabling the enchantment of stones of control earth elementals; or other such abilities."[3]
History
The stones were "erected by members of a very old druidic sect, almost certainly Flan folk.[1]
