Helm and Wand of Lynerden the Spinner is a set of two magical artifacts which have ended up separately in the hands of the two evil rulers of Winetha and Rinloru.
Description
The Helm and Wand of Lynerden the Spinner consist of two linked items—an armor piece and a magic wand.
"... an infinitesimally thin strand of magical energy has come to link the Twin Cities. Some unique magical resonance links the artifacts and spellcasters, and this straight line of magical energy can be seen easily with a detect magic spell. The link has no magical effects, nor can it be dispelled; it is simply there. Mordenkainen believes that the strange coupling of artifacts and powerful spellcasters will generate an uncontrollable magical force which will ultimately result in a massive Mordenkainen's disjunction which will have decimating effects on the two men and their magical possessions and possibly create magic-dead areas around the Twin Cities."[1]"
Powers
While the Helm and the Wand have magical properties of their own, they are most powerful when used together by a single wielder.
- Helm
- The Helm improves AC by 3 and improves saves against any attempts at mind control or possession also by 3. It can also be used to cast Color Spray, Improved Phantasmal Force, and Shadow Magic once per day each.
- Wand
- The Wand grants a +3 bonus against all fire- and cold-based attacks, and can be used to cast fireball and cone of cold once per day each.
- Combined
- The helm and the wand retain their individual powers and can be used to cast delayed blast fireball, incendiary cloud, mass invisibility, meteor swarm, and screen, once per day each. They also can be used to cast limited wish once per week.
History
The Helm and Wand were brought to the Flanaess by Oeridians centuries ago. They once belong to Lynerden the Spinner. The Wand ended up with Prince Lakaster Torquann of Winetha, while the Helm ended up with Delglath, leader of Rinloru. The two leaders are locked in an uneasy truce as they negotiate to reunite both items, as well as the Mace and Talisman of Krevell, another two-part magical artifact owned separately by the two lords.
Publication history
Excerpts of the manuscript from Ivid the Undying were originally published in Dragon magazine. Issue #204 (Apr 1994) contained the section about the "Twin Cities" of Rinloru and Winetha, which has the Mace and Talisman in it. The full manuscript was later published as the first ever official online supplement published for D&D (1995).
