Plar Eldried Sarneth of Grayington is a powerful noble and politican of Veluna.[1]
General
In Spring 591 CY, Plar Eldried Sarneth was heard muttering concern for his daughter, Jolene, who had travelled much in recent months following up leads on the whereabouts of her betrothed, the long-absent Prince Thrommel IV of Furyondy.[2]
Later in Spring 591 CY, children in Grayington were waking up screaming in terror night after night. Rhennee fortune tellers foretold the arrival of the "great darkness within" and were being run out of town by the plar as fast as he could find them. Further, Bishop Velt Harkin had gone missing leading to Plar Sarnath tearing apart the city and the surrounding countryside looking for him, while the local nobles pointed fingers blaming him for their troubles.[3]

Description
Appearance
Eldried is described as having “strong features, a hawkish nose, and wavy graying hair”.[4]
Eldried was about 49 in 594 CY. He appeared around fifty years old[5] and had ruled for 25 years[6] since becoming plar in the usual way for the family on “coming of age” at age 24. As such, he had become plar in about 569 CY at the age of 24, having been born in about 545 CY.
Personality and alignment
Eldried was a man of great passion[7], devout[8], domineering[9] and arrogant[10], although clearly a canny politician and with a commercial mind able to play the Velunese trading houses off against each other.[11] Bishop Harkin of Grayington said Eldried was always more interested in consolidating his power than his faith.[12]

Redin Sarneth was his sole son.

History
In 591 CY Eldried was the Plar of Veluna,[15] and the noble who ruled the diocese of Grayington, located in the north central part of Veluna.[note 1] The diocese border stopped just short of Veluna City, which was ruled by the Canon of Veluna although the city itself still fell under the military protection of Grayington. There were very few other noble houses, and the plar owned almost all the land, in the diocese. He was the biggest owner of land in Veluna after the church of Rao.[16]
Eldried was reluctant to hand over the plarship to his son, Redin, when due in Fall 593 CY[17] as he was more focused on religious matters than administration of the diocese[18]. However, apparent financial irregularities in the diocese’s tax affairs became apparent in 594 CY[19] that led to Redin demanding Eldried abdicate in his favor[20] in Spring 594 CY[21] rather than cause scandal.
Eldried was assassinated by demonic cultists soon after the Summer of 594 CY while trying to work out who was behind framing him[22], but raised afterwards[23] and then based in Veluna City trying to rebuild his power[24]. Adventurers subsequently rescued the kidnapped Bishop Velt Harkin who was revealed to have been replaced when Redin became plar, and that the demon Marduk and his cultists had been behind the framing of Eldried and secession of Grayington as part of a plot for Marduk to return from banishment.[25]
Eldried sought to regain the plarship and associated lands of Grayington, but the Celestial Order spent over a year squabbling about the succession. The Celestial Order sought to block Eldried reclaiming the plarship, some in spite or revenge with others desiring the plarship themselves. In 596 CY Eldried reached agreement with Count Westin Mori of Devarnish, then the most powerful noble, for Mori to support and campaign for Eldried as plar in exchange for Eldried marrying Elena Mori, the count’s younger (and 22 year old) sister. Eldried sought a bride to bear a legitimate heir to his recovered power. Mori would gain a family claim to Grayington.[26]
This plan did not fully play out. Elena demanded a Flan artifact from Eldried to prove his worth[27], but obtaining that artifact failed.[28] Later it was suggested Redin had cooled on the marriage.[29] Note in 598 CY Elena Mori married King Belvor IV of Furyondy.[30] In 597 CY, Grayington still lacked a plar with Eldried sidelined, affecting Veluna politics.[31] By 598 CY Westin Mori had become Plar of Veluna replacing the deposed incumbent Redin,[32] and indicating he was the most powerful noble in Veluna[33]. It was unclear whether Eldried regained the Plarship of Grayington.

- ↑ It is worth noting that at times the Veluna Living Greyhawk Triad seemed to use the terms Plar of Veluna and Plar of Grayington interchangeably. However, it was later indicated in Idle Hands, RPGA (2007), p.2, that the Plar of Veluna was an honorary title normally granted to the most powerful noble of the Vale.
