Plains of the Ulakandar
The Plains of the Ulakandar[1][note 1] is a political region of the Western Flanaess, though it is not a nation in the strictest sense. The name "Ulakandar" also applies to the tribes of nomadic horsemen who dwell within these lands.
History
The term Ulakandar derives from the name of the city Ulakand and refers to the people of that region.[4]
Geography
The Plains of the Ulakandar are situated in the Baklunish Basin region of the Flanaess, west of Ket and south of Zeif.
People
The native folk of the Plains of the Ulakandar are Baklunish with mixed racial characteristics absorbed from subjugated travelers or settled merchants.
Government
The Plains of the Ulakandar have no central authority; the government consists of various petty tribal khans and amirs ruled by progressively more powerful nobles (orakhans, ilkhans, or shahs) and royalty (padishahs, tarkhans, or kha-khans). There is great variation in particulars of government between nomadic tribes.
Heraldry
The Plains of the Ulakandar' coat of arms is blazoned thus: Gules, a scimitar per bend sinister or, in dexter chief a cross moline in saltire of the last.

- ↑ The Plains of the Ulakandar were previously known in older sources as the Plains of the Paynims[2] or simply Paynims.[3] The term "paynim" was removed in the Dungeon Master's Guide (2024) by WotC[4] because it is an archaic term which bears an offensive connotation similar to "heathen", particularly used to refer to Muslims.
