Enstad is the capital of the primarily elven nation, Celene.
History
During the Greyhawk Wars, Celene, and by extension its capital, became incredibly isolationistic.
Geography
Enstad is in northwestern Celene, nestled at the headwaters of the Handmaiden River, where the Kron Hills branch out eastward from the southern Lortmils.[1]
Cityscape
"Parks and meadows, filled with numerous fountains, pools, and gardens, are the ... chief examples of architecture in the elven capital."[2]
- Queen's Palace (also called the Palace of the Faerie Queen}[2]—"gold-chased silver domes and spires."[2] "majestic courtyard and sweeping front gates"[3]
- There are wooded gardens and parks surrounding the palace. The palace has guest chambers in the Royal Wing of the palace, in a round tower.[4]
- Grand Court[5][6] (or Great Court)[7]—this can refer to either the royal throneroom chambers in the palace, to the office of the monarch, or to the government in general.
- The Grand Court is highly steeped in the practice of the Fey Mysteries.[6]
- Nethalion Archive—though difficult for outsiders to access, this is one of the finest libraries in the entire Flanaess, a rival (in quality) of the Great Library of Greyhawk City.[8]
Travel
There are common routes of travel in and out of Enstad, though travel is restricted. These include (but are not limited to):
- Enstad to Verbobonc—3 days north through the western Kron Hills[9]
- Enstad to Tringlee—7 days[10]
People
"Bladesingers form an elite cadre of warrior-mages in the kingdom of Celene. Some of these agents work beyond Celene’s borders, wielding blade and magic against the queen’s enemies. The art of the blade song is unknown beyond that kingdom; no non-elf has learned its secrets."[11]
Population
Demographics
The overwhelming majority of the people of Enstad are elves, with the majority being grey and sylvan elves. Less than one-in-ten citizens are human, and even fewer are other species.
Notable individuals
- Queen Yolande (CG female elf Wiz13/Ftr2)—
- Onselven—chief advisor to the queen; also queen's cousin
- Lord ConstableParseval—
- Royal Consort—the traditional leader of the Companion Guard.
Individuals of minor note—
- Prince Fasstal Dothmar, wielder of Concluder—royal consort; c.591 CY entered the Moonarch of Sehanine, and did not return immediately (fate unknown).
- Prince Consort Triserron—first royal consort of Queen Yolande, whose death prompted the Hateful Wars
- Levalas (of Enstad) (f)—sage who authored Treatise on Mystical Rings.[12]
Religion
Yolande is a proud adherent of the Fey Mysteries and the official religion of Enstad (and Celene as a whole) is worship of the Seldarine.[6] Since there are gnomes and halflings who live in Enstad, there are also minor churches the gnomish pantheon and halfling pantheon, as well as those of Ehlenestra, Phaulkon, and Phyton.
Languages
Government
The government of Celene is an absolute monarchy, ruled by Queen Yolande. But, in the earliest of days, various elven princes ruled throughout the Flanaess "from the Velverdyva to the Welkwood."[13] Post-Great Migrations, elven lands had diminished to isolated realms like Celene.

Publication history
Gary Gygax (using the nom-de-plume "Garrison Ernst") used a city named "Endstad" in his serialized novella, The Gnome Cache—it is presumed to be the same settlement.[14][15][16]
