This page contains a listing all of the various creatures of the World of Greyhawk™ which are considered "species" or "races", in that they are sentient, not monsters, and most importantly—are possible choices for use as characters in at least one edition.

There is a difficult, indistinct line between what is considered a "race" or "species" and what is a "creature" or "monster" because these groupings make a Venn Diagram. Though in fifth edition a monster is unmistakebly defined as "[any being] controlled by the DM, even if the creature is benevolent",[1] in earlier editions this distinction was less clear. There's overlap in what are considered by different people to be in each group.

For the purpose of this wiki, we avoid a strict definition, to present as much information as possible. Some "monstrous" humanoids may be included in this category because they are notable in Greyhawk like drow, centaurs, lizardmen, quaggoths, beastmen, or githyanki, in addition more typical species like humans, dwarves, elves, gnomes, halflings, and orcs, et al (sometimes called demihumans).

This is a purposeful ambiguity, because in the City of Greyhawk, "unusual creatures" exist in a legal "gray area" where ofttimes city guards (and judges) enforce the criminal code regarding whether someone is a "person" or "monster" with varying interpretations.[2][3]
