Pluffet Smedger the Elder (also referred to as Doctor Smedger)[2] is the in-setting author of the glossographies which famously accompany A Catalogue of the Land Flanaess: being the Eastern Portion of the Continent Oerik, of Oerth—Volume III (the in-setting piece of literature as opposed to the sourcebook.)
Description
Little is known about Smedger the Elder, other than he is a renowned scholar, historian,[1] and accomplished linguist.[2]
Writings
After being lost for several centuries,[1] a copy of the Savant-Sage's encyclopedia, the Catalogue of the Land Flanaess, was discovered in an illithid's cave in the Riftcanyon, and brought to the Royal University of Rel Mord where it was studied by Pluffet Smedger the Elder. Over "several decades"[1] Smedger compiled a glossography to accompany each volume, updating and expanding it with more contemporary information.
Smedger published his Glossography for the Guide to the World of Greyhawk in 998 CY. No other comparable work had been written since Crosse Ways of Ulek by Andreas Wythe in 155 CY,[3] though that work only covered the Ulek states.
Only the third volume of the Savant-Sage's encyclopedia and Smedger's accompanying glossography still exist.[1]
"To aid his study of the Sage's books, Smedger the Elder created mathematical models, or games, that he used with his students at the university to recreate and examine historical events and political interactions described by the Sage....
While Smedger’s scholarly game-model was considerably different from [the] Advanced Dungeons & Dragons™ game, his representations of magic and combat have been translated approximately into AD&D terms."
—Steve Winter and Allan Hammack, The World of Greyhawk (1983)[1]
History
Pluffet lives in Rel Mord during the late tenth century CY, when "magic was not a lost art, but apparently, a fading one."[1]
