Jalpa is a city in the Kingdom of Ahlissa, which a bustling trade city, connected to Kalstrand by the Coach Keeps, and to many other cities, which, because of that, has more hostelries than any other city in the Flanaess. It was, in Coldeven of 591 CY, chosen to be a stop along the renewed Windmarch ordered by King Xanvner [1]
History
The city did not do well during and just after the Greyhawk Wars, losing many of the Urnst, Nyrondese and Greyhawk caravans that came through from Almor before the war. Since roughly one third of the population made their living providing services to travelers, this sharply increased poverty, as the city did not have the same reserves of wealth as Kalstrand. There was also a flood of refugees from the east, who brought an evil outlook, and between those two factors, crime rates increased. [2]
Because of all that, Prince Farland of House Darmen, who was in charge of the city at the time, supported his nephew, now King Xavener in his bid to lead House Darmen in its bid to take the Malachite Throne from Ivid V which ultimately failed because both Ivid V and the throne itself were in Rauxes when it was engulfed, though Xanvener did end up leading House Darmen to a throne when the Great Kingdom broke up shortly afterwards.
Geography
Jalpa was once part of the Great Kingdom, now part of the Kingdom of Ahlissa, just to the south of the Adri Forest, well west of Rauxes, though inland from Relmor Bay. It's located several miles from a shallow and sluggish offshoot of the Flanmi River known as the "Little Flanmi". It is the nexus point for roads leading from Rel Deven, Kalstrand, Torrich and from the north. [2]
Cityscape
The city has a unique air of faded magnificence, as many of the buildings are prime examples of perfection in classic architectural style, but upkeep is poorer than in most other cities.
One of the most famous buildings in the city is the Polyphonium, built by a distant ancestor of Otto the mage. The scalloped ceiling and bizarre crossbeams are quite distinctive, and it was allegedly made to have perfect acoustics, with rumors stating that it enhances metamagical operations and illusions. The elderly and partially deaf gnomish curator frowns on magical experimentations to that end however, and does not allow any sort of magery without express written permission from Prince Farland himself, signed in triplicate. [2]
Rumors and legends
Rumors abound that a group of necromancers serving Nerull fled Rauxes and ended up in Jalpa, and that they brought with them a unholy relic, a golden skeleton that can be animated when Luna is full and can mimic the death gaze of a nabassu. There are overnight disappearances that seem to substantiate the claims, but people flee the city for many various reasons. [2]
