Abyssal Gateways are portals to and from the Abyss found in Ravilla, which are permanently sealed and bound closed as magical artifacts.

Description

History

In ages past, during the Demon War in Western Oerik, hordes and legions of demons suddenly appeared through many portals, and swarmed out, devastating the land. When the end of the war came, Corellon Larethian gave the elves the sacred duty of guarding the remaining portals to the Abyss,[1] which had all been sealed and bound with all the magic the great elven archmages could put into them.

Great city-states were built around the Abyssal Gateways, with the portal at the centers of the cities.[1] The oath they took to defend the Gateways meant that the elves would be the first to stand against the demons, and the first to die, should the portals ever again open.[2]

In 79 CY (499 in the Sundered Empire), the only recorded instance of a Gateway being broken open occurred in Xanos, a large Ravillan city—it is referred to as "the Xanos incident".[3] Immediately, demons began pouring out of the Gateway, but it was shut down once again—though it was a brutal and grisly fight to do so.[3] Afterward, sorcery as a whole was blamed for the Xanos incident, and all practice of sorcery was banned and outlawed in Ravilla, claiming its source was abyssal power and demonology.
