The Barony of Dilwych is a minor region of Keoland best known for its eccentric ruler.
History
Establishment
The Barony of Dilwych was once part of the Duchy of Dorlin, but seceded over the last century over some now long-forgotten petty squabble. The current barony has formally existed for at least the past several decades.
Recent history
Following the death of the former baron, his son, Lord Malweig, had the baron mummified and placed upon the throne for several years, forcing visiting heralds to kiss the baron's signet ring. This practice ended after a visit by the Duke of Dorlin in 578 CY, who ordered the Bishop of Dilwych to bury the baron's body in the dark of night.
Lord Malweig thereafter formally assumed the title of Baron of Dilwych. He has largely ignored the politics of Niole Dra, instead engaging in self-important banquets, playing his servants against each other for entertainment, issuing grandiose letters of marque to wandering adventurers, and expanding his bizarrely-designed palace Castle Draconis Imperious.
Geography
Borders
The Barony of Dilwych is bordered to the north and east by the Duchy of Dorlin, from which it seceded. To the south is the March of Sedenna, and to the west is the March of Mareman.[1]
Major settlements
The capital of the Barony of Dilwych is the eccentrically named Castle Draconis Imperious, a vast and bizarrely-designed palace. It is located near the village of Dilwych, a small farming settlement with a population of only 504 as of the year 591 CY.[1]
People
Population and demographics
The population of the Barony of Dilwych are humans of larguel Suloise and Oeridian descent.
According to the Keoland Census of 589 CY published by the Living Greyhawk Keoland website, the population of the Barony of Dilwych is 15,623, including 11,850 humans, 3,642 halflings, and 131 half-orcs. There also 27,923 poultry and 12,434 meat and dairy.[1]
Religion
Religion is overseen by an official Bishop of Dilwych, who had the duty of burying the former baron.
Government
The Barony of Dilwych is a feudal province of the Kingdom of Keoland. It is ruled by Baron Malweig, self-styled Lord High Baron Draconis Eternal, Malweig I, an eccentric warrior-bard of House Neheli who pays more attention to the construction of his own palace than to the needs of his people.
In his stead, the Baron sends his High Herald Thaddeus Pliq to Niole Dra to handle his political duties. Pliq in turn avoids his duties in the courts, and instead spends most of his time entertaining young pages in his city apartments.
Economy
Resources
The main production of the Barony of Dilwych is agricultural, although its economy is poor relative to neighbouring regions. No major trade roads pass through this province.
Currency
The Barony of Dilwych uses the standard currency of Keoland: the platinum griffon (pp), gold lion (gp), electrum eagle (ep), silver hawk (sp), and copper sparrow (cp).
