Deirde Longland is the Justicar (military leader) of Hardby. In the later years of the Living Greyhawk campaign (597 CY+), she is the Despotrix of Hardby.

Description

Deirdre Longland is a broad-shouldered, strapping human woman. She has green eyes, a "freckled, tanned complexion and sun-bleached light brown hair".[1]

Personality

She speaks unequivocally and is imposing. Her skills as a military commander have made her "an able commander on the field of battle. However, these same qualities make her ill-suited to the more subtle cut and thrust of the political arena."[2]

Abilities

Because Longland is a cavalier and one of the best equestrians in the Flanaess (Ride +25), she has the ability to urge her steed into an exceptional burst of speed, far beyond other riders' or horses' ability. She also has great prowess with both lance and sword, especially when commiting a deadly charge.[3]

Despite her lack of subtlty or political prowess, she is ver knowledgable about the nobility and royalty of the area.

She speaks both Common and Auran.[4]

Str 18, Dex 14, Con 14, Int 12, Wis 14, Cha 10[3]

Possessions

Longland famously owns Yevaran, a +2 orc-bane bastard sword (means "Law’s Wrath" in Ancient Suloise), as well as +1 lance, +2 breastplate, and +1 mithral arrow-catching heavy shield.[3]

History

"In her younger days, Deirdre and her mage brother Oscar gained notoriety for slaying the Szek of Safeton in revenge for his abduction and murder of their grandmother."[3]

"[Deirdre and Oscar] have a fair reputation along the Wild Coast. Their grandmother was a noble of the Court of Hardby. The town of Safeton abducted her, and when no ransom was paid as demanded, the Szek had her publicly executed as an object lesson....
The two grew and came to the Szek's town one day. Nobody knew their identity, and when they did, it was too late. The next day, Safeton had a new ruler and the family Longland of Hardby was avenged. Ransoming is no longer so popular with the masters of Safeton, either."[5]

Deidre and her brother, Oscar Longland, fought in the Greyhawk Wars, in the Siege of Safeton.[3]

"Deirdre was elevated to the Gynarchy and appointed Justicar in 581 CY for her role in defeating a Pomarji host in the Welkwood."[3]

In Living Greyhawk

Longland featured in various plot arcs in the Living Greyhawk campaign, primarily in "Core" regional adventures.

In 597 CY, adventurers "provided a potion which kept the ailing Despotrix, [Ilena Norbelos], alive long enough to participate in a crucial vote. Days later she died, and was replaced by Deirdre Longland, a strong proponent of alliance with Greyhawk."[6]
