Description

Derider Fanshen (NG female human cleric 7/radiant servant 7 [Pelor]) is a tall woman at 5'10" , with tan skin, honey blonde but greying hair, and bright grey eyes. She's attractive and keeps herself in good physical shape.[1].

Derider isn't married, but occasionally has romantic relationships.

Personality

Well known for her mercy, compassion, and clumsiness (Dex 4), everyone misses her. She has a longstanding reputation for being personable, wise, warm, and is greatly trusted by many[1]. Although Derider is kind, she is shrewd as well and an excellent judge of character.[2]

Derider is known for not being quick to anger. But, when she does, it is always with just cause and she is implacable.[2] Especially in the face of deliberate unprovoked acts of evil or malice. On these rare occasions, those who know her carefully heed what she says and does. Despite her primary focus of healing, she'll use the full power of her magic in such times![3]

Abilities

Over the years, and through various editions, Derider Fanshen has been depicted as gaining levels, and her ability scores changing. This is one of the best examples of a character growing across their story arc. From 576 CY to 591 CY, her Wisdom rose, and her Constitution fell by a point. She rose from level 12 to 13 in the same time, and by 598 CY, she had gained level 14. In third edition, Derider was given multiclass stats which added a Prestige Class (Radiant Servant of Pelor) while retaining her overall total character level which increased by one (level 13 to 14) between 591 CY and 598 CY. Due to the benefits of the prestige class, she still had full divine spellcasting of a level 14 cleric.

Possessions

Derider Fanshen carries her favorite weapon—a staff of striking.

She owns a home just north of the Free City Arena on University Street just across the street from the Clerkburg City Watch Station (C13).[6] It is a cozy, two-story, half-timber house similar to other homes in the city and is furnished simply, but with excellent quality furniture. She lives alone with three cats.[7]

Activities

Fanshen sometimes has a soft spot for the poor and downtrodden, and sometimes visits the slums to heal the sick and injured. As an advocate for those in need, the poor of the Free City often leave petitions at her residence, seeking help for themselves, their friends, or family. She always tries help if she's able.[8]

Renown for defending the rights of the poor, and makes homeless children in the Old City one of her greatest causes.[8]

Relationships

Derider is very close friends with both Jallarzi Sallavarian and High Matriarch Sarana. She keeps in touch with old friends and family, and is a popular guest at parties.

Derider has family who live in the Free City.[8]

History

Derider grew up in a fairly normal middle-class family. Her love of animals and taking care of all the sick or hurt animals she found was eclipsed only by her being all thumbs. She was asked to train to become a priestess of Pelor by the local church in the Free City when they became aware of her ability and interest. After becoming a novice priestess, she adventured for several years, but eventually returned to the city full-time after she inadvertently broke both a decanter of endless water and a beaker of plentiful potions.[9] She remains friends with her former adventuring companions who live in the city. [10]

Derider returned to the Temple of Pelor (G10) and to her duties where her ham-handedness still sometimes caused problems. "Her work among the poor of Greyhawk brought her to the attention of the Directing Oligarchy, and when a constable died after being nursed devotedly by Derider, she was offered the post."[9] She is trusted by the Directing Oligarchy as their healer when they are ill or injured.

Derider Fanshen retires from the Directing Oligarchy at the end of 591 CY to pursue a life of service to Pelor, and as a legal defender[1]. Etin Derecs replaces Derider as Constable of Greyhawk when she retires in 591, who was later replaced by Sir Gavin Ambus.

"Even Nerof Gasgol comes to regret her leaving the Directing Oligarchy, as the priceless works of art she routinely tripped over and destroyed were worth considerably less than what the corruption of Etin Derecs cost, or what the uncompromising honesty of Sir Gavin Ambus now costs."[5]
