Gaborren's Rift is a town built within a gold mine in Grandwood Forest. It is home to the gnomes who call the forest home.
Geography
The city is located underground, in a gold mine that is in the southern part of the Grandwood, far from the eastern edge, near the Mikar.[1]
People
Demographics
The roughly 700 gnomes who live in Gaborren's Rift are considered rock gnomes, or steinneblin, rather than forest gnomes, or forstneblin, even though the settlement is in the heart of the woods, because they live in the underground area surrounding the gold mine.[1]
Religion
The gnomes here worship the gnomish pantheon and have a special affinity for Garl Glittergold. They tell the a unique myth, wherein Garl Glittergold was able to defeat Gruumsh in physical combat. Because of this, anytime an orcish warband is within a score of miles, the gnomes of Gabborn's Rift send out a warband mounted on iguanas to chase them down. No orc warband has ever defeated a gnomish warband from Gabborn's rift.[1]
Economy
Resources
The one thing the mines produce is gold. Anything else the gnomes living there might want, they have to trade for.[1]
Trade
The gnomes are extremely insular, and refuse contact with almost everyone. They rarely bother talking to humans, not even woodsmen, unless it's under exceptional circumstances. The main bulk of their trade, though, is with the wood elves of the forest. They trade their gold mainly for food, and crafted items, though they occasionally get their hands on magic items as well. The elves use the gold for statuary or jewelry, though since the moonmages have access to teleport, the gold does occasionally travel farther afield, as the elves trade with other groups.[1]
Defenses
The mine is exceptionally well-defended. The first line of defense is a number of deadfall and other traps. Once a would-be intruder gets past those, they encounter the guards. Guards are often accompanied by trained horned iguanas, who can cause severe damage with their rush attacks, and are particularly effective, since they often have improved invisibility cast on them. The gnomish guards are armed with small hand-catapults. These weapons can launch not just stones, but also glass globes of various concoctions that break on impact. They have various effects, including toxins/poison, but one of the most common is a mix of mold and pollen that mimics a non-magical dust of sneezing and choking.[1]
