Greenvises,[1] also known as greenvise vines,[2] are carnivorous plant creatures found warmer climes throughout the Flanaess, most notably on the Isle of Dread.
Description
"Greenvises are ambulatory vegetable horrors that stalk the fringes of some humanoid settlements. ...
A greenvise is a larger, sturdier version of the venus flytrap, with a thick, green, trunklike stem and four sturdy tendrils that hang down like vines. When the creature opens its mouth, a mottled pink maw lined with toothlike thorns is revealed; when closed, the mouth structure resembles an ordinary leafy bush. A greenvise has small, tendrillike roots that it uses to move."[1]
"Greenvise vines are slow, opportunistic eaters that feed on unwary animals, but they aren't averse to attacking larger prey."[2]
The greenvise's stalks are "tougher to carve than a ripe melon."[3]
Its interior contains a "froth" similar to "the saliva of a fleshy creature" which "reek[s] of sap".[3] Rather than a stomach, the inside of the main stalk which serves as the "mouth" and "throat", are "rows of dense thorns protruding down toward the plant’s gut, arrayed in such a fashion as to prevent captured prey creatures from escaping back up to the maw."[3]
Ecology
Greenvises can be found on the Isle of Dread in the Vohoun Ocean,[3] as well as other "temperate or warm hills, plains or marshes".[1]
"Greenvises rest at night and actively hunt during daylight hours, repositioning themselves throughout the day if prey in a particular hunting area proves scarce."[1]
Some fey cultivate greenvises and it is not uncommon for stirges to lair near them.[2]
Personality
"These carnivorous plants are not bold—they prefer to ambush lone prey that happens to come too near."[1]

In order to catch prey, greenvises set up in a location and lie in wait,[1] suddenly lunging out at the first living creature it detects. Greenvises rely on their incredibly long ensnaring vines (reach 15ft.) to catch their victims with their tendrils and grab or grapple them, then constrict them. Greenvises are then able to use their pulling vines to bring prey to its "mouth", where they can be swallowed whole. Even without swallowing, the greenvise's vise bite is tremendously dangerous.
Though a greenvise is unable to see because it does not have eyes, the greenvise can locate any creature near it (60ft.) with its woodsense[1] (a type of "blindsight").
Some greenvises can expel a type of "highly acidic" gas from their stalks, which obscures vision (including darkvision) in a large area around them (60ft.). This death fog is used similar to an octopus' ink, and even within 5ft. it is difficult to see, with sight beyond that being functionally impossible.[1] Those caught in it find themselves stumbling about, unable to see enough to move at more than a radically reduced speed. The fog simultaneously severely burns the greenvise's prey as long as they are in it, and even objects. The death fog can persist for up to about two minutes. This fog does not affect the greenvise, or it's own woodsense.[1] It is normally used if a greenvise is "extremely hungry or seriously hurt."[2]
Society
Greenvises have no more society than a normal plant.
Though they are typically found alone, sometimes a pair or a "patch" of greenvices is found.[1] But, even in a patch, greenvices do not share their prey.
