The Iron Fist Guild is a mercenary organization or guild operating in Nyrond.
History
The Guild was founded as a mercenary organization in 504 CY (1148 O.R.) by a Nyrondese captain. As Nyrond was in a peaceful period, he put out a call for all warriors willing to serve only for pay not reasons of ethics or nationalism. Scores of lower ranked fighters applied for membership, and the Iron Fist Guild was formed.[1]
Activities
In the late 570s CY the Guild had about 84 members in Rel Mord. Guild members tend to be hired to act as bodyguards for merchants, watchmen for the yardmaster at the shipyards, guarding shipping on the Duntide River, bounty hunters against bandits in the Flinty Hills, and occasionally as muscle for shady business operators.[1]
Relationships
In the late 570s CY the general public in Rel Mord accepted and even appreciated the presence of Guild members in the city, but would tend to avoid members due to rumors (with some basis) of brutality by Guild members. Soldiers in Rel Mord maintained a steady watch on the guild, although would not harass the Guild without official permission.[1]
Recognition
By the late 570s CY CY guild members (except for officers) only lower ranked warriors (1st to 3rd level fighters) could be members, and at a certain point (4th level) had to either leave or successfully duel an officer for their position. This allowed the Guild to avoid issues with the military and government by avoiding the Guild ever becoming or being seen as strong enough to be seen as a threat to Nyrond. As a result, the Guild tends to be left to operate. A person seeking join the Guild in the late 570s CY had to pass two requirements—firstly, a verbal recommendation from a current Guild member, and secondly, undertake a non-lethal duel against a member of higher skill (at least two levels higher) witnessed by the Guild's officers. Courage and skill had to be shown, and a losing applicant might still be allowed to join.[1]
Headquarters
The Guild's headquarters is located in Rel Mord, and includes a tavern and barracks for members.[2]
Prominent Members
In the late 570s CY the Guild was lead briefly by Alaric, a fighter of great renown.[1]
In the Living Greyhawk Campaign
The Guild featured in the Living Greyhawk campaign in the Nyrond player-region. It was further detailed in the "Nyrond Gazetteer" and "Nyrond Metagaming Organizations" fan-created source-books.
