Governor-Mayor Lanod Neff is the chief representative of the city of Greyhawk in Diamond Lake.

Description

The mine managers run the mines of Diamond Lake in trust for the Free City, and it is Neff’s responsibility to ensure that the proper share of the proceeds goes back to Greyhawk, and that the mines are run to the maximum benefit of his city.

Personality

By reputation, Lanod Neff is a lecherous philanderer[2][3] and is self-centered and hedonistic.[4] He is noted for being incredibly uncooperative (and even obstructionist), especially with those he views of a lower station, and "his primary interests lie with his own comfort, desires, and aggrandizement."[2] He is jealous of the mine managers, and spends much of his time trying to cajole the Directing Oligarchy to rebuild or improve the city-owned property he lives in to make it nicer or more elaborate than those of the mine managers.[2] He is not above using blackmail and has used it in the past against Sir Anton Palmirian to gain his position in Diamond Lake,[5] and uses agents (like Constance Grace at the The Midnight Salute) to gather "salacious stories about local soldiers, visiting dignitaries, and even three of the powerful mine managers for potential blackmail fodder."[6]

Hooks:
"My time is valuable. What could you possibly want?[1]
"This is no concern of mine, get out of here and stop wasting my time with your ridiculous and alarmist notions."[2]

Possessions

Relationships

His brother is the local mage Allustan, although Allustan does not use the surname "Neff" which Lanod does. It is custom in the Flanaess for wizards to typically use only one name.[7]

Lanod's father is a previous governorr-mayor of Diamond Lake.

A geomancer local to Diamond Lake, known simply as Mere, once forced Neff to publicly apologize for harassing her and making an unwanted sexual advance, which she rudely rebuffed. Neff has a personal vendetta against her.[8]

History

"Neff "grew up in Diamond Lake with his brother, Allustan. The son of the town’s powerful and efficient governor-mayor, [he] abused his influence and shamed the mine managers with social indiscretions. When finally [he] went too far, [his] father sent him to Free City of Greyhawk, ... placing Lanod in a plum assignment with the city watch.
Though Allustan thrived in the company of Tenser and his ilk, the politics proved too much to handle, and he split with the group [before 585 CY] after a bitter ethical dispute. [Allustan's] presence supports [Neff's] corruption, but he is unwilling to leave his family to the wolves. The same political disinterest that got him into trouble with Tenser keeps him from seeing the worst of his brother’s offenses."[9]"

During his time as a City Watchman, Neff blackmailed Sir Anton Palmirian (of the Directing Oligarchy) to receive appointment as the governor-mayor and return to Diamond Lake.[5]
