Depth:over 1 mile

Onyxgate is a innocuous looking keep that was occupied by Duke Szeffrin after his sack of Almor in 585 CY. The appearance is deceptive, since the bulk of Onyxgate is the dungeons and cavern complexes hidden beneath the ground, stretching down deeper than one mile. The main feature of those tunnels is the gate to the Abyss.

Description

The keep is deceptively simple, as all of the tunnels are concealed with illusions, and protected with magical barriers and wards. The site radiates excessive amounts of conjuration/summoning magic, because of the gate to the Abyss.

History

During the late stages of the Greyhawk Wars, Nyrondese generals urged an attack on Onyxgate, believing that such an assault would weaken Duke Szeffrin, because numerous fiends were regularly seen leaving Onyxgate for other locations, including Bloodcrystal. King Archibald refused, believing it was immoral to force any soldiers to face the possibility of a fate worse than death.

Geography

The fortress is located just south and slightly to the west of Bloodcrystal, inland from the coast along Relmor Bay.

People

There are several priests of Hextor that are cloistered within the keep, and several The Duke's most hated captives, including at least two rival generals. There are also numerous undead throughout the complex, including both corporeal undead such as zombies and skeletons, and more spectral undead, such as wraiths. There are also several cambions that can cast charm monsters to control the ropers, xorn and basilisks that also live there. [1]

Rumors and legends

It is said that the only reason the gate stays open is because of an extremely dark magical artifact, and possibly the will of Xaene. How much truth there is to that is debatable.

There are also rumors that at least one of the priests of Hextor who are living at Onnyxgate knows "the secrets of revivification."[1]
