History
The Sarneth family tradition was the eldest son (not daughter it would appear) took the role of Plar on “coming of age” at 24[4] when regarded as old enough to rule properly[5]. Veluna was not a patrilineal realm, so this was a Sarneth family tradition (perhaps reflecting the conservative nature of the diocese). Duchess Clairese Landos had inherited the Plar of Whitehale[6], and the Plar of Kempton had been female for 5 generations due to the tendency of the Bassalle family to have daughters[7].
Redin reached the age of 24 in the fall of 593 CY[8] but Eldried did not step aside, with that not occurring until certain events in 594 CY[9].
Eldried was reluctant to hand over the Plarship to Redin when due in Fall 593 CY[10] as he was more focused on religious matters than administration of the diocese[11]. However, apparent financial irregularities in the diocese’s tax affairs became apparent in 594 CY[12] that led to Redin demanding Eldried abdicate in his favor[13] in Spring 594 CY[14] rather than cause scandal.
Soon after Veluna was invaded by the forces of “the One”, the lich and former Canon Herion, and Canon Hazen was killed in 594 CY at the Battle of Whitehale with the Crook of Rao being lost[15]. The forces of Grayington were held back by Plar Redin to defend their own diocese, and even withdrawn from protecting Veluna City.[16]
Redin sought the position of Canon of Veluna after the death of Canon Hazen.[17] This was opposed by his uncle, Mathew Sarneth, before his death in Summer 594 CY[18] on the basis he was too young and naive, which Eldried speculated may have been related[19]. Priffin Truft was elected Canon[20], resulting in Redin seceding Grayington from Veluna following his “visions” from Rao.[21]
In 595 CY Redin was abducted by adventurers retained (with plausible deniability) by Veluna to remove him as Plar of seceded Grayington[22], and later retired to a monastery to reflect on his crimes. Herion forces were defeated by Veluna by late 595 CY[23].
