The Royal Opera House is a entertainment venue in the Free City of Greyhawk's High Quarter. On maps with a key or legend, the Royal Opera House is designated "H8"[1] or "H9".[2]

Description

Royal Opera House depicted in The City of Greyhawk boxed set. Art by Valerie Valusek. 1989.

The name of the Royal Opera House is a misnomer from the very start. There has never been a royal ruler of the City of Greyhawk.

Once the most elaborately decorated building in the city, the Royal Opera House was neglected for the last few decades until it was in a disgraceful state of repair. Finally, grants from several noble families allowed renovation to begin.[2]

History

People

The Opera House is a mix of many, many performers from all levels of society. They are as varied as the people of the Free City are; perhaps even more.

The Opera House is directed and conducted by Selmund Rogersson, who wears "outrageously ostentatious clothing with no sense of style[2]. He continues the tradition of his predecessor, Amadeus Wofzart, of taking the productions in a new direction by "giving the people what they want"; i.e. cheesy, low-class performances in the afternoons known as "silver dreadfuls".[3] Other than those, the schedule is filled with solo performances by the Grand Diva of the Opera House, Aestrella Shanfarel.

More than 20 performers and 10 stagehands (some of whom occasionally sing in the chorus) are employed by the Opera House.

There is a known and long-standing rivalry with the Grand Theater. They both ridicule the other socially and occasionally do things like throw vegetables, and it has not been unknown for things to get out of hand and result in rare violence.

Rumors and legends

Unbeknowst to most, the half-elven Grand Diva of the Opera, Aestrella Shanfarel, is actually a Greyhawk dragon who uses her power, influence, magic, and followers to actively (but secretly) work against evil in the city.[2]
