Otiluke was an archmage and member of the Circle of Eight. He was slain by Rary on the Day of Great Signing, at the close of the Greyhawk Wars.
Description
Otiluke's "long hands are always active—gesturing and emphasizing."[1]
Appearance
Otiluke stood just 5'1",[1] had short black hair, a thin beard, and brown-hazel eyes.[1][2] He was well-dressed but appeared rather puny.
Personality
The neighbors who used to live near him described him as being not well-liked. He was "often rude and insulting" as well as "verbally absuvie" and "touchy and cruel-tongued, threatening, and 'a really nasty little [expletive]!'"[2] It was rare to see him smile, but he was well-tolerated because having a great archmage living nearby brought with it his prestige of being an Oligarch and president of the Society of Magi.[2]
"It is surely Otiluke's small size and physical puniness ... which have made him compensate by becoming an aggressive and abrasive personality."[1]
Abilities
Small and weak, he's one of the few humans who could wear a magical item called gauntlets of kobold power and have it actually benefit him tremendously.[1] It was probably intended as one of those cursed items which cannot be taken off, but Otiluke loved his.
Otiluke was not a wise man, either. He was, of all the Circle, the least endowed with common sense. Mentally, he was brilliant, the match for Tenser and Bigby in sheer intellectual prowess, but some of his ideas were a few tankards short of a keg.

Home
Otiluke rather famously lived in a well-appointed, high-quality two-story townhouse on Summoner Court in the "southern end of the River Quarter"[note 1] of the Free City, "just off Marsh Street and about 300 feet from the Marsh Gate." It was built in 524 CY as an addition to an already-existing home, but has a "two-foot-thick firewall" without any passage between the two. He purchased the townhouse around mid-573 CY[3] from a "berwer and his family" who'd purchased it from the original owner—"a middle-class leatherworking family.[2]
After Otiluke's death, the residence was sold at private auction in spring of 585 CY by "local relatives of Otiluke, left to them in his will,"[4] (a cousin)[5] through the Guild of Wizardry and Guild of Lawyers, Scribes, Accountants acting as intermediaries.[3] It was sold for in excess of 20,000 gp.[3]
"The townhouse has been sold or rented several times since his death, but no one stays long. The place is locally known as the 'Fallen Mage Townhouse', though it has no other name."[6]
Relationships
Imiric von Suss-Varren, a gnomish count of the Principality of Ulek, once served Otiluke as a henchman.
He lived with a young woman named Glorial, who served him as an apprentice and with whom he was in a "loveless" physical relationship, from 580 CY until his death.[2]
Activities
In the 570s and 580s CY, Otiluke is a member of the Circle of Eight, president of Greyhawk City's Society of Magi, and a member of that city's Directing Oligarchy.
History
Otiluke was born in early Patchwall of 542 CY.[8] In 576 CY, he joined the Circle of Eight.[9]
Otiluke replaced Leomund on in the Circle of Eight.[9] When he first joined the Circle of Eight, the other members were unsure of granting him the position. He was already an Oligarch and president of the Society of Magi. He was largely appointed to the Circle of Eight because "they needed a member permanently in residence in the Free City." He was given the invitation to join by Ott and Tensers.[1]
When Rary the Traitor set magical traps at the signing of the Treaty of Greyhawk on the Day of Great Signing, Otiluke was one of the Circle of Eight members who caught him. In the great magical battle which followed, Otiluke was slain. He died at the age of 41, just a month before his 42nd birthday.[8]

Abominations
Otiluke was responsible for the creation of a monster called a "howler wasp." Unnatural abominations, the product of magical meddling in genetics, these quickly-reproducing monsters are hybrids of giant wasps and carnivorous monkeys. Otiluke made them to defend his home against a cabal of slaadi, but he was of course unable to control them, and they escaped into the wild.[10]
Publication history
Otiluke is one of the famous mages of the Greyhawk setting whose spells were included in the 1988 Greyhawk Adventures hardbound.[11]

- ↑ During the Living Greyhawk campaign (2000-2008) Otiluke's townhouse is referred to as being in the Foreign Quarter. This is because some of the boundaries of the districts of the City of Greyhawk (notably the Foreign Quarter and the Garden Quarter) were shifted slightly, in an effort to better organize them. This is from theTetreault map (2000) used by the RPGA. All other sources describe the townhouse in the River Qaurter.
