Sword of Dunstan
The Sword of Dunstan, also known as Wisebrand or the Sword of Nyrond, was a magical great sword of the rulers of Nyrond.
The Gord the Rogue novel of short stories Night Arrant featured A Revel in Rel Mord, set in Nyrond with King Archbold III in (presumably) the 580s CY. This novel was after Gary Gygax's departure from TSR, and therefore cannot be regarded as officially published content. However, it does provide some details from Gygax's version of Greyhawk or the Flanaess.
The story featured Gord and Chert traveling to the Gnatmarsh as a quest under geas in punishment to retrieve the pommel-stone of the Sword of Dunstan for Archbold.
The pommel-stone appeared to be an ordinary stone, a dull piece of mottled black and white rock. It was dweomered and melded as one with the blade when replaced. While missing, a large ruby was used as a pommel-stone instead. The value of the sword was suggested by Archbold gifting the ruby to Chert as a "bauble" with little concern, although it did later prove to be a flawed gem. Comments by the royal mage suggested that the return of the pommel-stone to the sword meant "Nyrond is whole", and he "now wields power with wisdom".
The stone was taken by the grandmother of Quodilde, a witch of the Gnatmarsh, from King Dunstan II when he spurned her as queen. It had been held in the village of Grimalkin (or Grimalkinsham), the lair of Quodilde in the Gnatmarsh, for "generations" until retrieved. The kings of Nyrond had apparently been seeking to recover it for years.
