Spelling of name

Abra Saghast I originally created this page based off of the name on the map from the wiki. According to Lonely Harbour, it's spelled Salt Harbour. I can fix it but the only source on the name I have is the module. I do not know if there is other sources. PlagueBearer (talk) 03:56, 28 November 2024 (EST)

Usually, I go with the general rule (and that of WotC at the time) that "text trumps table". Meaning, the text usually has more editing and proofreading, and is usually the more correct when it comes to comparing to infographics, tables, illustrations, etc. Also, the graphic artist, illustrator, or graphic artist creating the image or table usually isn't the author, so they don't necessarily have the actual text in front of them (or even read it) when creating it.

However, it's a little more difficult to say with LG though, since there's so many authors and so little editorial oversight.

I would note that "harbour" is a decidedly British spelling, and most US publications don't use it because it seems stilted and breaks the flow of a sentence when it causes the reader to stop and look at it.

But, I can say Anna Meyer says she got "Salt Harbor" from an LG DoU map. When I looked, the official DoU map has it spelled as "harbor". I would assume the author of that adventure was going for a British affectation.

Whether the name was first on the map and the author misspelled it, or the Triad corrected it after the adventure was published to use the American spelling (because WotC's policy says to), I'd keep it as "harbor". I'd say the most correct is the one the Triad says it is.

Other note: in official content (Te Adventure Begins) it says names often have multiple spellings canonically, and that's normal and is an in-setting thing NPCs do, too. —Abra Saghast (talk) 07:07, 28 November 2024 (EST)
