Treant are creatures which entirely resemble mundane trees, but hidden in their bark and branches are a face, arms, hands, and other anthropomorphic features. They are found in the woods and forests and are essentially indistinguishable from normal trees while they are stationary. They are highly intelligent, dislike evil beings, and uncontrolled fire, and can cause trees around them to come to life and attack trespassers as needed.
Environment
Treants are found in wooded areas, usually in forests which have other magical innhabitants. The Grandwood Forest has native treants.[1].
Typical physical characteristics
Small treants are 12-15 feet tall, middling-sized treants are 16-19 feet tall, and full-grown treants are over 20 feet tall.[2]
Abilities
Treants are not easily surprised. They can cause nearby trees to come to animate and move about, albeit more slowly that the treant.[2]
Being trees still, and made of wood, treants are vuknerable to fire, suffering penalties to saving throws against fire-based attacks, and suffer additional damage from attacks that deals fire damage.
Treants are sentient trees with human characteristics. They are typically portrayed as protectors of the forests and antagonists to industrialization and despoiling of nature. They are typically allies of druids and fey, opposing malicious races such as orcs.
Creative origins
Treants are inspired by the talking trees of many of the world's folklores. Treants were originally based entirely on the Ent from J. R. R. Tolkien's world of "Middle Earth", even using the same name.
The name "treant" comes from combining "tree" and "giant," and is usually pronounced /|tree-ant/.
