Ul-Bakak is a neutral trading village of 900[1] in the western desert of the Bright Lands. It is the only stable point of contact between the desert folk and the rest of the Flanaess. Even travel to this peaceful place is dangerous, however, for the pass to the nearby town of Hardby is largely controlled by the Tareg, a hostile and suspicious folk, even by Bright Desert standards.[1]
Little more than a permanent collection of tents, this nomad trading villiage stands at the foot of three craggy hills at the eastern end of Hardby Pass.[1] The settlement grew around a now well-guarded spring, and is a holy site for Suel and Flan nomads, as well as Abbor-Alz hillfolk. Ul Bakak claims neutrality in Rary's fight to subdue the region, and the Traitor allows its people this illusion because of its trade with Hardby. Despite strict instructions from Greyhawk, the despotrix of Hardby personally (though secretly) authorizes trade with Rary's go-betweens in the neutral village of Ul Bakak.[2]
"Assisted by a ragtag band of desert warriors, the dour-faced and single-minded Kumhaik (N human (Flan) male Ftr12) maintains order here. A veteran of over thirty years of skirmishing and survival in the deep-desert, Kumhaik is forthright and honest. The grizzled warrior will not risk the neutrality of Ul Bakak for any cause, no matter how just, and does not suffer fools lightly. He is famed for his equestrian skills and for his patience; desert tales relate how he once tracked a renegade merchant guilty of striking a rival in the marketplace for over two weeks before capturing and punishing him."[2]
