The Schley map from the Dungeon Master's Guide (2024) divided up into the common regions referred to in official material.[1][2]

The Flanaess (pronounced fla-NES[3] or alternately, flah-nay-ess or flay-nayz)[4] is the eastern part of the continent of Oerik, one of the four continents of Oerth, and is sometimes simply called Eastern Oerik. It takes its name from the Flan people, who are the original settlers and native inhabitants of the (sub-)continent. The name simply means "land of the Flan."[4]

As well as being home of demihuman and humanoid races, it is also inhabited by the Flan, Oeridian, Baklunish, Suloise, Rhennee, Olman, and Touv subspecies of humanity.

The Flanaess has been depicted on the Darlene map in the WoG boxed set (1983), twice by Rob Lazzaretti—in the LGG (2000) and on the Lazzaretti map) (2005), and the Schley map in the Dungeon Master's Guide (2024).

Geography

The Flanaess can be broken down geographically as follows:

Sheldomar Valley or "Old Keoland"

Southwest; including nations such as : Keoland, the Ulek States, Geoff, Sterich, Yeomanry, and Bissel.
"The fertile Sheldomar Valley features two great rivers, the Sheldomar River and the Javan River, running between the Crystalmists and Lortmil Mountains until it reaches the Azure Sea. The climate is warm and mild, and many elves, dwarves, gnomes, and halflings live peacefully with Suel, Oeridian, and Flan farmers and lords."[5]

Central Flanaess

The Lazzaretti map (595 CY), by Rob Lazzaretti, 2005.
Western Nyr Dyv or "Old Ferrond"
Includes nations such as: the Domain of Greyhawk, the Wild Coast, Furyondy, Veluna, Shield Lands, Perrenland, and Celene
"The lands from the Nyr Dyv to the Yatils have long been a stronghold of good in the Flanaess, home to humans of Oeridian and Flan descent, along with dwarves, and elves. The rich soil, pleasant climate, and healthy trade relations with neighbors to the east, south, and west, make it a strong and wealthy region."[6]
"Northern Reaches"
Centered on the lands of Iuz north of Lake Whyestil, it also includes Perrenland, the Horned Society and "most of the land from the western edge of the Vesve Forest across the north-central Flanaess[...]"
"These lands are generally wilderness dotted with ruined human towns and active orc lairs, with a cool to temperate climate."

Except in the far north, temperatures reach below freezing (32°F) only in the winter months[7][9] of Sunsebb and Fireseek and sometimes at night in late autumn and early spring. Even then, temperatures seldom dip below 0°F.[7][9] The northeast and central northern regions of the Flanaess are the coldest,[7][9] with cold weather extending earlier into Ready'reat and later into Readying, making winter "twice as long".[7][9] The warm currents of the Dramidj Ocean moderate the climate of the lands that border it.[7][9]

Summer typically lasts five or more months[7][9] (including both Low and High Summer).

Prevailing winds blow from the northeast in winter and autumn and from the southeast the rest of the year.[7][9] Wintry northern winds are sometimes known as "Telchur's breath," while easterly winds are sometimes called "Atroa's laugh."[citation needed] Plentiful rainfall supports bountiful agriculture throughout most of the Flanaess.[7][9]
