The County of Flen is a major province of Keoland.

History

Founding

The western reaches of Keoland were first settled circa -242 CY, when Keoland's expansion under its early kings first grew the state to encompass its modern boundaries, including what is now the County of Flen.

The city-states of Flen and Cryllor were subsequently established to fortify the western holdings. Rulership was given to a noble family of Oeridian ancestry, who also gained a seat on the royal court of Keoland. Flen and Cryllor have since been rivals, competing to dominate important trade routes in and out of Keoland.

The precise date of the county's establishment is difficult to pin down. It was founded no earlier than -242 CY, when Keoland first expanded as far as the Javan River, but no later than -230 CY, when Keoland expanded past the Javan River to establish Sterich.[1]

Recent history

Raids of giants and other humanoids from the Jotens have beset the county of late. Raids have increased since 589 CY, when the halfling village of Kilm was burned to the ground.

Geography

Borders

The County of Flen is the westernmost province of Keoland, a narrow region at the northwest edge of the kingdom.

It is bounded to the west by the Javan River, which divides Keoland from the formerly Keoish province of Sterich. To the east, it is bordered by the March of Mareman and Good Hills Union, and the westernmost reaches of the Good Hills occupy a significant proportion of the County of Flen, particularly in its south. The border province of March of Mandismoor is directly to the north.

Major settlements

The capital of the county is the city of Flen, the third most populous city in Keoland at 11,900 people as of 591 CY. It is located in a valley of the Good Hills, with defensible tall hills on three sides and a walled barrier facing Sterich to the west.[1]

The halfling village of Kilm is located in the south of the county, just north of the river.

Godakin Keep is a major fortification in the region, located just south of the river delta on the Keoish side.

Notable locations

Flen is notable for its land trade routes, the last stop by ground from Keoland to Istivin, capital of Sterich. The Ford of Marich, north of the delta where the Javan River meets the Davish, forms a key point in the primary trade route between Istivin and Keoland. A ferry crosses the Javan river, with a small village built around the ferry crossing.[2]

The most significant roadway here travels east-west through the Good Hills, though the city of Flen, and on to Sterich via the Javan Ferry crossing, where roadways continue through Sterich to the capital of Istivin. The road is known as the King's Highway as it passes through the Good Hills. A smaller roadway passes south from Flen to the southern river, where it branches west to Godakin Keep and west through Kilm via the Cryllor Road.[2]

Other trade routes connect the region to the Good Hills, whose gnome, dwarf, and halfling inhabitants do brisk trade with the city of Flen, and also to the north, where the elves of the Dim Forest and traders from Hochoch in Geoff ply their wares.

River traffic here is limited. The river near Flen is too shallow for large shipping.

People

Population and demographics

The humans here are historically of Oeridian ancestry. A high proportion of demihumans live here, both in the major cities and in the Good Hills.

According to the Keoland Census of 589 CY published by the Living Greyhawk Keoland website, the population of the County of Flen is 55,688, including 48,915 humans, 2,345 dwarves, 1,949 gnomes, 1,796 halflings, and 683 half-orcs. There also 89,803 poultry and 37,554 meat and dairy.[1]

Government

The County of Flen is a feudal province of the Kingdom of Keoland. It is ruled by Countess Allita Elgarin, a human cleric of the Suel deity Xerbo. The countess is a strong ally of King Kimbertos Skotti, and her family has ruled the county for centuries. In 590 CY, her son, Lord Garson Elgarin, disappeared leading a raiding party in the Jotun mountains.[1]

Economy

Resources

While Keoland's economy is heavily agriculture-based, a considerable amount of Flen's income comes from its key position in foreign trade.

Currency

The County of Flen uses the standard currency of Keoland: the platinum griffon (pp), gold lion (gp), electrum eagle (ep), silver hawk (sp), and copper sparrow (cp).
