The Elemental Plane of Earth is an infinite mass of stone and earth, interrupted only by rare pockets of air and other elements. Every form of earthen material can be found on this plane.

The plane has no gravity, or possibly it has gravity that comes from every direction at once. Most movement on the plane has to be accomplished by tunneling, however.

Structure

The Elemental Plane of Earth touches the border Ethereal Plane at all points. Toward the Positive Energy Plane it becomes the Quasielemental Plane of Mineral and toward the Negative Energy Plane it becomes the Quasielemental Plane of Dust. Toward the Elemental Plane of Water it becomes the Paraelemental Plane of Ooze and toward the Elemental Plane of Fire it becomes the Paraelemental Plane of Magma. Vortices spiral through the Ethereal Plane to connect the Plane of Earth with the depths of the Underdark and the hearts of great mountains on the Prime Material Plane.

The Iron Crucible is a fountain of molten metal that connects the Sevenfold Mazework of the dao with a lava tube on the Elemental Plane of Fire beneath the City of Brass. The dao and efreet use this route to trade with one another.

The Pale River is a vortex that connects the Great Dismal Delve of the dao with the muddiest oyster beds of the marid on the Elemental Plane of Water.

On the plane of Mechanus, an ancient and long-lost race created a vast machine larger than many planets, and empowered it using a permanent portal to the Elemental Plane of Earth, drawing all the energy needed to drive the engine from the slow tectonic forces of the plane. The portal is always open, but it offers only a one-way trip to the Elemental Plane of Earth. Those who wish to get away from the elemental plane must find another route.

In the fiery depths of Phlegethos in the Nine Hells of Baator there is a portal between the city of Abriymoch and Ogrémoch's fortress of Stonemire. To pass through the portal, one must sacrifice a large diamond, which turns to powder as the planewalker moves through. Unfortunately, both ends of the portal are guarded with traps and wards by the rulers of the respective fortresses.

Ecology

Fauna

Mundane animals who have managed to survive on the Elemental Plane of Earth include giant ants, worms, moles, mice, and other burrowing animals.

Inhabitants

• Known as Lords of Stone, Those Who Wait, Rock Fathers, Old Men of the Mountains and even Hearts of Steadfast Stone, the dharum suhn are spirits inhabiting the element of earth, embodying concepts of stability, strength, endurance, wisdom, contemplation and immovability. Said to be on the verge of being demi-powers, these beings fall beyond the purviews of the earth archomentals, Sunnis and Ogremoch, and are not involved in their conflicts. (PSMCIII)

Features and settlements

• Bigger than most continents, the Great Dismal Delve is the khanate of the dao genies, in which countless slaves mine to fill the coffers of the genies of earth. As a result of this mining, the dao lands are filled with enough tunnels and caverns that non-digging creatures can explore them.
• The Sevenfold Mazework is the capital of the Great Dismal Delve, a trading center, court, and palace at the Delve's absolute center. It's a three-dimensional maze complex enough to confuse even minotaurs.
• The Aviary is a 15-mile diameter cavern inhabited by winged elves, or avariel.
• The Caverns Under the Stars is a 30-mile wide pyramid-shaped chamber inhabited by Geb, the Egyptian god of earth.
• Deathdelve is a "fantastically large" orcish mine said to contain enough clear air and fresh water for orcs and humans to survive (The Inner Planes, 13).
• The realm of Grumbar, Boss of the earth elementals, is said to be a giant cliff face within a pocket of air, upon which Grumbar's gigantic face sometimes appears.
• Sandfall is the fortress of Sunnis, Princes of Good Earth Creatures, built in a cavern under an eternally falling column of sand that leads into a bottomless pit.
• Stonemire is the enormous fortress of Ogrémoch, a blistering hot region near the Paraelemental Plane of Magma.
