Mithat is a walled port city in the Kingdom of Nyrond.

Geography

Mithat is on the coast of Relmor Bay at the southern end of the Sword Road.[1]

History

About the end of the Greyhawk Wars and prior to Spring 585 CY King Archbold III revoked the grant of town rulership of the local noble family, following on from the incompetence of Royal General Basmajenn having gotten most of them killed.[1]

At the end of the Greyhawk Wars the Battle of Blazebane saw Nyrond fight the forces of the Great Kingdom to a halt defending Mithat.[1]

In Spring 585 CY the city was a virtual military garrison with 4,000 naval militia and 3,000 troops stationed there to guard against Duke Szeffrin's forces in the former Prelacy of Almor. General Younard and Admiral Hugarnd jointly administered it. Unlike many other areas the naval forces based in the city were well disciplined and regarded themselves as elite, being disgusted at the virtual piracy other naval forces had engaged in at times. About 3,000 Almorian refugees had fled there, but found work and homes. The population had seen the fiends, undead, orcs and other evil forces that had destroyed Almor, and knew why Almor's people had fled to Nyrond, reaulting in a wartime spirit still prevailing in the city.[1]

By 591 CY Nyrond's naval dominance of Relmor Bay continued to be projected primarily from Mithat.[2] [3]

The reorganization of provincial administration as part of the reforms by King Lynwerd I that commenced Needfest 1, 591 CY resulted in Mithat becoming the capital of the province of the Almorian Protectorate, ruled by Governor Younard.[2]

People

Population

In Spring 585 CY the city had a population of 28,000.[1][4] By 591 CY it was 29,000.[2]

Mithat is a very law abiding place, with thieves and rogues finding very lean pickings and no thieves' guild in this city.[1]

Demographics

The races of Nyrond can all be expected to be found here, being humans (with an Oeridian dominance, and Suel present, as ethnic background), Olve (mainly sylvan with a small high elf presence), Halfling (stout), Dwarf, Gnome, half-elf and half-orc. There is a stronger Suel influence amongst humans in the south.[2]

Nyrond generally is lawful neutral in alignment, with lawful good, neutral good, chaotic good, and neutral also prevalent.[2]

Notable individuals

Notable individuals in or from Mithat include:

Religion

The common religions of Nyrond are Heironeous (the official state religion), Beory, Rao, Pelor, Zilchus, Norebo, Pholtus, Ralishaz, Boccob, Delleb, Celestian.[2]

Following the Greyhawk Wars superstitions and the worship of evil gods (including Hextor and Incabulos) began to grow as a sign of the despair of the common folk.[5]

Languages

The common languages of Nyrond can be expected to be spoken here, being Common, Nyrondese, Old Oeridian, Elven, and Halfling.[2]

Government

Mithat is located within the Kingdom of Nyrond.

Following the reorganization of provincial administration under King Lynwerd I that commenced Needfest 1, 591 CY Mithat was placed under the control of Governor Younard as the provincial capital of the Almorian Protectorate.[2]

Military

In Spring 585 CY Mithat had a massive garrison of 4,000 naval militia and 3,000 infantry & cavalry. It was at that time (and remains) the most important Nyrondese naval base. Fleet Admiral Hugarnd was based there, and major Nyrondese generals and King Archbold were frequent visitors.[4]

Economy

Mithat has a large fishing fleet operating in Relmor Bay (with naval protection when required) that is crucial for feeding the people of the bustling city.[1]

In Living Greyhawk

In the Living Greyhawk campaign, Mithat featured in a number of adventures. It was also detailed in the "Nyrond Gazetteer" fan-created sourcebook.

During the Living Greyhawk campaign the Almorian Protectorate was granted in 592 CY provincial status as the Duchy of Almor, and Younard was appointed Duke.[6] The previous Protectorate was granted some lands from the Duchy of Korenflass including the city of Mithat which became its provincial capital.

Following Sewarndt's coup at the end of 594 CY, Mithat was taken by Hextorian and Scarlet Brotherhood forces supporting Sewarndt, blockading Nyrond navy ships in harbor. In 595 CY adventurers were sent by Lynwerd to investigate tales Duke Younard had gone mad, and reconnoiter the city. As Lynwerd's forces assaulted Mithat and the city rose against the occupiers, naval forces under Fleet Admiral Hugarnd joined the assault. Younard was revealed to have become aware of a prophecy about unavoidable impending disaster prior to the coup. He feigned madness at the time of the coup, to avoid bloodshed and also to try to fulfill the prophecy and restore Lynwerd.[7] This included allowing Almor to vote in council to support Sewarndt's claim to the throne.[8]

Following the liberation of Mithat, Younard was able to secure most of Nyrond's coast east of Mithat while Duchess Verin Talnith of Woodwych did the same for most of the coast west of Wragby. Younard and Hugarnd were planning breaking the blockade at Oldred when Lynwerd came to them to organize the combined forces to coordinate an attack on Rel Mord. Hugarnd was to lead forces to attack Oldred from the sea, recapturing it or at least tying down forces of Duke Korenflass.[9]

Vayan Darol was named as the Mayor of Mithat in the Gazetteer.
