Description
Appearance
In Spring 585 CY Younard was 60 years of age, but looked 10 years older due to the despair and hopelessness he felt at the time. He is 6'1" and bald, with brown eyes and huge shovel sized hands he used to wield his warhammer.[1]
Personality and alignment
He is a lawful and decent man. He is Lawful Good in alignment.[1]
History
In Spring 585 CY Younard was one of 3 field generals responsible for the north and north-west, along with Myariken and Hanshal.[2] He was technically commander of the Almorian border region with no less than 25,000 troops deployed[3], but effectively powerless as King Archbold III and General Basmajenn directly issued the orders to the armies stationed there. He could see their incompetence and weakness, but was powerless to change anything leading him to feel despair and hopelessness.[2][1] The troops in the Almorian borderlands mainly held Younard and Basmajenn in contempt as a result, although Younard was in the field with them most of the time. Fleet Admiral Hugarnd was a more popular and commanding figure.[3] Younard and Hugarnd jointly administered the city of Mithat after Archbold revoked the noble title to it of the local family.[3]
Younard was gifted a ring of water walking by the wizard Kurast when he visited Kurast's Tower.[4] Archbold, Younard and Hugarnd were said to be considering a strike against Onyxgate in 585 CY to weaken Duke Szeffrin.[5]
By 591 CY Younard had been appointed Governor of the Almorian Protectorate, with the capital in Mithat.[6]
Abilities
Str 17, Con 17. In Spring 585 CY he was a 12th level Fighter (first edition).[1]
By 591 CY he was a 13th level Fighter (third edition).[6]
Equipment and possessions
In Spring 585 CY Younard wielded a warhammer +4 and wore plate mail +3 which also provided protection from evil.[1]
In Living Greyhawk
Younard featured in a number of adventures in the Nyrond region of the Living Greyhawk campaign.
Younard was noted to have been in command at the Battle of Arat in the Almorian Borderlands during the Greyhawk Wars, which Colonel Zylinchin and soldiers from the Valorous League of Blindness fought in.[7]
His House and first name were not detailed in the Nyrond Gazetter published by the Nyrond region Triad (unlike most other nobles). During the Living Greyhawk campaign the Almorian Protectorate was granted in 592 CY provincial status as the Duchy of Almor, and Younard was appointed Duke.[8] The previous Protectorate was granted some lands from the Duchy of Korenflass including the city of Mithat which became its provincial capital.
Following Sewarndt's coup at the end of 594 CY, Mithat was taken by Hextorian and Scarlet Brotherhood forces supporting Sewarndt, blockading Nyrond navy ships in harbor. In 595 CY adventurers were sent by Lynwerd to investigate tales Duke Younard had gone mad, and reconnoiter the city. As Lynwerd's forces assaulted Mithat and the city rose against the occupiers, naval forces under Fleet Admiral Hugarnd joined the assault. Younard was revealed to have become aware of a prophecy about unavoidable impending disaster prior to the coup. He feigned madness at the time of the coup, to avoid bloodshed and also to try to fulfill the prophecy and restore Lynwerd.[9] This included allowing Almor to vote in council to support Sewarndt's claim to the throne.[10]
Following the liberation of Mithat, Younard was able to secure most of Nyrond's coast east of Mithat while Duchess Verin Talnith did the same for most of the coast west of Wragby. Younard and Hugarnd were planning breaking the blockade at Oldred when Lynwerd came to them to organize the combined forces to coordinate an attack on Rel Mord. Hugarnd was to lead forces to attack Oldred from the sea, recapturing it or at least tying down forces of Duke Korenflass.[11]
After Lynwerd resumed the throne, Younard hired adventurers in 595 CY to investigate the death of the local magistrate and mayor of the town of Newtown following brigands and bandits troubling the area.[12]
Younard traveled to Oldred in 596 CY to create political ties with the new Duke Vardushi of Korenflass.[13]
