Plane of Faerie, also called the Feywild, is a plane within the Great Wheel known for being the homeland of fey creatures.

Description

"The Feywild, also called the Plane of Faerie, is a land of soft lights and wonder, a place of music and death. It is a realm of everlasting twilight, with glittering faerie lights bobbing in the gentle breeze and fat fireflies buzzing through groves and fields. The sky is alight with the faded colors of an ever-setting sun, which never truly sets (or rises for that matter); it remains stationary, dusky and low in the sky. Away from the settled areas ruled by the seelie fey that compose the Summer Court, the land is a tangle of sharp-toothed brambles and syrupy fens — perfect territory for the unseelie fey to hunt their prey."[1]

The Plane of Faerie is ruled by two queens—Titania, Queen of Summer (also seen as the "Queen of Light") and the Queen of Air and Darkness. Each has their own court of follwers—the Seelie Court and Unseelie Court, respectively.

History

Structure

Inhabitants

"The Feywild is inhabited by sylvan creatures, such as elves, dryads, satyrs, pixies, and sprites, as well as centaurs and magical creatures such as blink dogs, faerie dragons, treants, and unicorns. The darker regions of the plane are home to such malevolent creatures as hags, blights, goblins, ogres, and giants."[1]

The inhabitants of the Feywild are varied in temperament from kind to malicious, but almost all have a mischievous side to them and few stopp to consider the needs or worries of visitors to their home. While many of those living in Faerie areuntamed, large numbers also congregated according to race or by political allegiance.[2] Just as the geography is reminiscent of Oerth's, some of its inhabitants existed as fey "echoes" of Prime creatures.[3]

All manner of fey species were found within the Feywild.

Eladrin are the beings who have the closest thing to a civilization in the Feywild.[4] They are the descendants of elves who never left the Feywild, and over the millennia had become suffused with the plane's primal magic.[5]

Seelie and Unseelie Fey

Most but not all fey served one of two godlike archfey queens, Titania the Summer Queen or the Queen of Air and Darkness, who shared an ancient and bitter rivalry.[1] Those who belonged to Titiana's Seelie Court were known as seelie fey, and were generally good-aligned and represented or celebrated the beauty of nature. They were known to be honorable toward visitors to the Feywild, if a bit mischievous, but they did not welcome non-fey to join their Court. Those who belonged to the Queen of Air and Darkness's Unseelie Court were known as unseelie fey, and were generally evil-aligned and represented or celebrated the darker and more macabre aspects of the natural world. They were generally more dangerous and untrustworthy in their dealings with visitors, however they were known to be more welcoming of non-fey into their Court.[1][6][7] The Unseelie Court worked tirelessly to undermine the Seelie Court, sometimes violently but more often through games and cruel mischief.

The remaining inhabitants of the Feywild either held no allegiances except at their own whims, or served another of the archfey, such as Oberon or Hyrsam. Uglier inhabitants of the Feywild, such as fomorians and hags, were generally not welcome among either the Seelie or Unseelie Courts.[1]
