Rasfern is a village in what was once the western edge of the Great Kingdom, now The Kingdom of Ahlissa, which is known for a populace that extremely tranquil and helpful to outsiders, though the Prince is well known for enacting swift vengeance on anyone who would harm any of the citizens. The village is named for the ferns which grow at the lakes near around it.[1]
History
When Prince Carwend sent a message asking Prince Benzeden for aid and tribute, he was expecting tithes to fund patrols and soldiers. What the Prince of Rasfern sent was a pair of iron golems, with a note saying that Benzeden supported Prince Carwend, but would rather be left alone. The golems became some of the best defenders of Rel Deven, and Prince Carwend did not ask for more support, not wanting to anger the clearly powerful mage.[1]
Geography
Rasfern is located to the south of Oldridge and due west of Jalpa. It is not on a river, but the village does have a number of small lakes, which are fed from underground sources. Each year in spring the lakes' water is unseasonably warm. Each year during Flocktime, the purple-leaved ferns for which the village is named blossom with pink flowers that have an penetrating aroma.[1]
People
Notable individuals
The authority figure of the village, Prince Benzeden, is a powerful archmage, and lives in a spired tower overlooking the village, which is enchanted with the most powerful of anti-divination spells. He is a recluse who rarely visits anyone or is visited in return. He is known to summon invisible stalkers, air elementals, and aerial servants as messengers, who tend to be extraordinarily powerful (20+HD). This makes many wary of him, as he is both powerful and inscrutable.[1]
Other inhabitants
Some few nixies live in the larger bodies of water, and there are water weirds in the smaller lakelets.
Religion
Prince Benzeden is a faithful follower of Boccob.[1]
Rumors and legends
There are also whispers that the water has unusual effects on the population, as the people never get angry or upset, but also never show any joy or delight, which has led many to be suspicious of the village and its surroundings.
